Job Description
At David Nice Builders, we craft construction masterpieces through integrity, enduring relationships, and passionate people. Join our growing team and help us deliver exceptional civil construction projects that exceed client expectations! Position Overview We're hiring a Skilled Laborer to join our civil construction field crews in the Williamsburg, Virginia area. This is not a general labor role. We're looking for someone who has been on active sites, understands the sequence of civil work, and can step in with limited supervision to get things done right. If you know how to read a site plan, work safely alongside equipment operators, and take pride in doing skilled field work without needing to be managed every step of the way, we want to hear from you. What You'll Do Help support grading, trenching, and utility installation tasks using hand tools, machinery, and remote compaction equipment. Support and help complete erosion control installation including silt fence, inlet protection, and related measures per plan. Follow trench safety guidelines and assist with installation of trench boxes and shoring. Work in direct coordination with heavy equipment operators using hand signals and clear verbal communication. Assist with layout tasks including setting stakes, marking lines, and setting up lasers. Help load, unload, transport, and stage materials to keep civil scopes moving efficiently. Maintain organized, clean work zones and participate actively in safety meetings and toolbox talks. Step into informal leadership of less experienced laborers when the situation calls for it. Perform additional duties as directed by the Site Foreman or Superintendent. What We're Looking For 1 to 3 years of hands-on experience in civil or general site construction. This role is not entry level. Working familiarity with trenching, grading, underground utility support, and erosion control practices. Ability to read basic site and civil plans and execute related fieldwork with minimal follow-up is a plus. A safety-first mindset. You maintain your PPE, know trench safety, and don't need reminders. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to job sites. Physical ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, lift up to 50 pounds regularly, and sustain physical output throughout the shift. Certifications CPR/AED Certification required (or obtained within 30 days of hire). OSHA 10-Hour Training required (or obtained within 30 days of hire). Trenching and Excavation Safety preferred (or obtained within 90 days of hire). VDOT Flagger Certification preferred where jobsite requires it. We support our people in obtaining required certifications and cover the cost. You Might Be a
