The Concrete Superintendent is responsible for the overall field execution of assigned projects for Assuncao Brothers, Inc. (ABI). This position provides day-to-day leadership and direction to Foremen and field crews to ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, productively, and in accordance with project plans, specifications, schedules, quality standards, and contractual requirements. The Superintendent serves as the key field leader and liaison between project management, foremen, field employees, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders. The position is responsible for coordinating manpower, equipment, materials, sequencing, and field operations while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, productivity, schedule performance, and workforce development. The Superintendent is expected to lead by example, develop strong foremen and crews, anticipate field needs and challenges, and create an environment of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities:
Project Execution Provide overall leadership and direction for field operations on assigned projects. Direct and support foremen in the planning and execution of daily and weekly work activities. Ensure concrete work is performed in accordance with project plans, specifications, contract requirements, applicable codes, and ABI standards. Coordinate the sequencing and execution of concrete operations, including formwork, reinforcing, placement, finishing, curing, walls, structures, foundations, curb, sidewalk, and other applicable concrete work. Maintain a strong field presence and proactively identify and resolve issues that could affect safety, productivity, quality, or schedule. Establish clear expectations for Foremen and field crews and hold team members accountable for performance. Coordinate with project managers and other project leadership regarding field conditions, project priorities, upcoming work, and required support. Workforce Planning Plan and coordinate field manpower requirements based on project schedules, production goals, crew capabilities, and upcoming work. Work with company leadership to appropriately allocate and adjust union manpower as project needs change. Evaluate crew composition and individual capabilities to ensure employees are appropriately assigned and utilized. Anticipate future manpower needs and communicate hiring hall, staffing, skill, or classification requirements in advance. Maintain working knowledge of applicable collective bargaining agreements, union classifications, jurisdictional requirements, and work rules as they relate to field operations. Partner with Operations, Payroll, and Human Resources on union workforce matters when additional interpretation, administration, or employee relations support is required. Safety Leadership Make safety planning an integral part of field operations and reinforce a culture in which employees take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of those around them. Lead by example and ensure Foremen consistently reinforce ABI's safety expectations. Participate in pre-planning activities to identify project-specific hazards and appropriate controls before work begins. Ensure required personal protective equipment, safety procedures, and project-specific requirements are followed. Ensure appropriate toolbox talks, job hazard analyses/pre-task planning, inspections, and required safety documentation are completed. Stop or correct unsafe work practices and promptly address unsafe conditions. Participate in incident, accident, and near-miss reviews and assist with identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions. Collaborate with company safety/risk personnel and project leadership to continuously improve field safety performance. Ensure compliance with applicable OSHA requirements, owner requirements, and company safety policies. Project Schedules & Productivity Understand the overall project schedule and translate project milestones into actionable short-term field plans. Develop and communicate daily and weekly work plans with Foremen and project management. Monitor field progress against schedule, production goals, estimated quantities, and planned labor hours. Identify potential delays, constraints, or productivity issues early and communicate them to project leadership. Recommend and implement adjustments to sequencing, crew size, means and methods, or resource allocation to improve productivity and maintain schedule. Ensure field activities are appropriately planned before crews begin work to minimize downtime and unnecessary labor or equipment costs. Quality Control Ensure work is completed in accordance with plans, specifications, approved submittals, tolerances, and applicable industry standards. Review plans, drawings, specifications, and other project documents to ensure field teams understand project requirements. Conduct regular field inspections and verify work is properly laid out, formed, reinforced, placed, finished, and cured. Identify quality concerns early and take appropriate corrective action. Coordinate required testing, inspections, and documentation with project management and appropriate third parties. Promote a "build it right the first time" approach to minimize rework and protect project schedule and profitability. Equipment & Material Coordination Forecast equipment, material, and supply needs based on upcoming work. Coordinate equipment requirements and utilization with project management and company operations. Ensure equipment is appropriately utilized, maintained, and returned or reassigned when no longer required. Coordinate concrete deliveries, reinforcing steel, forms, embeds, materials, and other supplies necessary to support planned production. Identify potential material or equipment constraints early enough to avoid disruption to field operations. Documentation Ensure accurate and timely completion of required field documentation, including daily reports, timekeeping, production information, safety documentation, equipment usage, quantities, and other required records. Review foremen's daily reports and time records for completeness and accuracy. Ensure employee classifications, hours worked, cost codes, and other required payroll information are accurately reported, particularly on prevailing wage and public work projects. Promptly communicate changed conditions, delays, extra work, owner/contractor directives, or potential scope changes to the Project Manager. Assist project management in maintaining appropriate documentation to protect ABI's contractual and financial interests. Participate in project meetings as required and communicate relevant information back to Foremen and field employees. Qualifications & Skills Minimum of seven (7) years of concrete construction experience, with prior experience as a Foreman, Superintendent, or comparable field leadership position preferred. Extensive experience with concrete construction, including heavy highway, bridge, structural concrete, retaining walls, formwork, curb, sidewalk, and other public/DOT concrete work. Demonstrated experience supervising foreman and field crews. Strong understanding of concrete construction methods, formwork, reinforcing, placement, finishing, curing, and quality requirements. Experience working in a union construction environment preferred. Strong ability to read and interpret construction plans, drawings, specifications, schedules, and contract documents. Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety practices with OSHA 30 certification required. Strong leadership, communication, organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively lead employees with varying levels of experience and technical capability. Ability to communicate professionally with project management, clients, inspectors, union representatives, subcontractors, and field personnel. Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project locations as required. Physical Requirements Ability to continually work in an active construction environment. Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, and move throughout construction sites for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds as required. Ability to work outdoors in varied weather and environmental conditions. Ability to work extended hours, early mornings, nights, or weekends when project schedules require.
