Monday to Friday, day shift, 35 to 40 hours per week; occasional nights or weekends with advance notice

Positions are throughout San Diego and southern Orange counties, and we want safety people who already live and work here. This is an observation role, not a site safety officer role. You will drive to three to five jobsites a day, watch contractor crews doing electric, gas, and civil work, document what you see (safe and at-risk) in the client's observation app, talk with foremen about what needs to change, stop the job when someone is about to get hurt, and escalate the serious stuff to the utility's program manager the same hour. You will not be parked at one site all day, and you will not be running a contractor's safety program. If you like being in the field, working independently, and talking to crews, this is a good fit. What you will do Observe utility contractor crews performing overhead and underground electric, gas distribution, substation, civil, and related work across the service territory Document observations using the Hazard-Exposure-Control format in Predictive Solutions (SafetyNet) and complete a daily log in Smartsheet Rate risk, communicate findings to crew supervision on the spot, and escalate high-risk and life-threatening conditions immediately Attend pre-construction meetings, tailboards, and joint safety walks; respond to incidents and document facts when requested Daily paperwork Tier 3 observers also mentor newer observers and take the complex, high-risk work What you need Tier 2: 3+ years in a safety-related role, at least 1 year in a utility or similar environment (electric, gas, pipeline, heavy civil, energy, or industrial construction), OSHA 30, and at least 30 additional hours of safety training (excavation and trenching competent person, LOTO, traffic control, confined space, electrical or gas safety, fall protection, or similar) Tier 3: 5+ years in safety, 3+ years in a utility or similar environment, and an associate degree in a safety field or an equivalent professional certificate; CHST, CUSP, ASP, or CSP strongly preferred. Direct experience observing electric or gas utility crews is a plus, not a requirement Working knowledge of Cal/OSHA Title 8 and common utility construction hazards: excavation, traffic control, energized work, cranes and rigging, confined space, heat Experience documenting safety observations in a mobile app (Predictive Solutions, Procore, SafetyCulture, or similar) A reliable pickup or SUV you can use for work (unpaved access roads and staging yards are part of the job); we pay a monthly vehicle allowance plus mileage and install a GPS telematics unit (Utility requirement), and you carry your own auto insurance at $100,000/$300,000 or better Valid California driver's license with a clean record for the last three years (no chargeable accidents or moving violations); you will be enrolled in DMV pull notice Able to communicate clearly and calmly with crews in the field, in plain language, and in writing Live in San Diego County or southern Orange County Must pass a background check; must not be currently employed by a Class 1 contractor working for the utility in a way that creates a conflict Start date We are staffing a multi-year field safety program for a major San Diego utility, with the first observers starting this fall. Start dates are set once the client approves each observer's assignment through its onboarding process, and we will give you a firm date before you give notice anywhere. We also have construction safety and industrial hygiene work in the region for the right people in the meantime.
