$37,000 - $41,600 annually (depending on qualifications and experience) Job Summary The Code Enforcement Officer is responsible for enforcing the provisions of Miller County's ordinances related to zoning, building codes, property maintenance, nuisance abatement, signage, and other county codes. This position investigates complaints, conducts inspections, issues notices of violation, and works with property owners to achieve compliance. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, diplomatic, and committed to improving the quality of life in Miller County through fair and consistent code enforcement. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Receive, investigate, and document citizen complaints regarding potential code violations. Conduct field inspections of residential, commercial, and agricultural properties to determine compliance with county ordinances. Issue notices of violation, stop-work orders, and citations as authorized by county code. Maintain accurate records, photographs, and case files for all enforcement actions. Prepare and present cases to the County Board of Commissioners, Planning Commission, or magistrate court when necessary. Work cooperatively with property owners to achieve voluntary compliance whenever possible. Interpret and explain county codes, ordinances, and regulations to the public. Collaborate with other county departments (Building Inspections, Environmental Health, Sheriff's Office, etc.) on joint enforcement actions. Attend and participate in public meetings as required. Perform other duties as assigned by the Planning & Zoning Director or County Administrator. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of zoning, building, property maintenance, and nuisance ordinances (or ability to learn Miller County codes quickly). Strong attention to detail and excellent documentation skills. Ability to interpret and apply codes and regulations fairly and consistently. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to handle difficult situations tactfully. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and ability to learn county-specific software. Ability to work independently in the field with minimal supervision. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Valid Georgia driver's license and clean driving record. At least one (1) year of experience in code enforcement, building inspection, planning/zoning, or related field preferred. ICC (International Code Council) certification as a Zoning Inspector or Property Maintenance Inspector, or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire. Must be able to pass a background check and drug screening. Physical Requirements Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to walk, stand, bend, and climb for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally. Visual acuity to read plans, maps, and conduct detailed inspections.
