Job Description
The Town of Berwick is seeking an experienced Building Inspector to perform field inspections of building construction and internal plumbing for the Planning & Development Office. This is a regular part-time, non-exempt position reporting to the Director of Planning & Development, with day-to-day work direction from the Code Enforcement Officer on code enforcement matters.
ABOUT THE POSITION
The Building Inspector inspects construction and plumbing work for compliance with the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code, the Maine Internal Plumbing Rules, and other applicable codes, and serves as a technical resource to the public, contractors, and Town staff. This position performs inspection and technical review work.Primary responsibilities include:
Primary responsibilities include: Conducting building construction inspections at required stages, including footing and foundation, framing, insulation and energy, and final inspection, for compliance with MUBEC and approved plans Conducting internal plumbing inspections for compliance with Maine Internal Plumbing law Documenting each inspection in writing, including date, location, scope, findings, photographs where appropriate, and pass or correction status, and filing the record in the permit file Issuing correction notices identifying code deficiencies, and re-inspecting upon correction Inspecting sites, buildings, and premises in response to complaints or referrals, and submitting written findings to the Code Enforcement Officer Reviewing building plans and submitted documentation for code compliance and providing comments to the Code Enforcement O fficer Answering questions from residents, contractors, and design professionals on construction methods, materials, and building and plumbing code requ irements Observing and documenting erosion and sedimentation control conditions during field inspections, and reporting deficiencies and suspected illicit discharges to the Code Enforcement Offic er Scheduling and performing inspections within the assigned work schedule, coordinating through the Administrative AssistantWHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for someone with depth in construction and plumbing practice who can apply code requirements accurately, firmly, tactfully, and impartially. The successful candidate will read and interpret plans and specifications with confidence, explain technical requirements clearly to people without a construction background, deliver unwelcome findings professionally, document field work completely for the permanent record, and work independently with limited direct supervision.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent Five years of prior work experience, preferably in the construction trades, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ab ilities State Certified Code Enforcement Officer within one year of appointmentCOMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Starting pay is up to $40 .00 per hour depending on qualifications and relevant experience. This position receives paid holidays that fall on a regularly scheduled workday, prorated to the regular workday schedule. It is not eligible for Paid Time Off or other Town benefits except those mandated by law.HOW TO APPLY
