Substation Electrician Job Description The substation electrician installs, inspects, maintains, and repairs high- and medium-voltage substation equipment and electrical systems. This role performs routine maintenance, basic electrical testing, and troubleshooting using meters, meggers, drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams. The position follows strict safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, grounding, PPE, and switching, while supporting outages, emergency response, and service restoration. The electrician also supports field operations by installing conduit, cable, and wiring, operating tools and equipment, performing physically demanding tasks, and documenting completed work and test results. Responsibilities Install, inspect, maintain, and repair high- and medium-voltage substation equipment and associated electrical systems. Perform routine maintenance on substation and industrial electrical equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation. Conduct basic electrical testing and troubleshooting using meters, meggers, multimeters, and other diagnostic tools. Interpret and work from electrical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, manuals, and one-line diagrams to complete tasks accurately. Troubleshoot and test electrical systems, controls, motors, transformers, relays, generators, and other industrial equipment. Perform point-to-point wire checks, installation verification, and electrical testing to confirm proper system functionality. Support maintenance and commissioning activities on industrial electrical systems, including medium-voltage equipment (up to 35kV in some cases). Install conduit, cable, and wiring in accordance with electrical standards and project requirements. Operate hand and power tools, test equipment, and other field tools safely and effectively. Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO), grounding, PPE, switching, and other safety procedures at all times. Support planned and unplanned outages, emergency response, and service restoration activities as needed. Document completed work, test results, and any issues found or resolved in a clear and accurate manner. Work independently and as part of a team to complete assignments in a high-paced, challenging field environment. Adapt to rapidly changing roles and responsibilities based on site operational needs and project priorities. Perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting, carrying, climbing, kneeling, and working at heights and in confined spaces. Maintain a strong safety focus, ensuring compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and best practices. Essential Skills High school diploma or equivalency certificate. 3+ years of experience working as a licensed electrician. Experience with high-voltage and medium-voltage electrical systems and substation equipment. Ability to troubleshoot and test electrical systems, controls, motors, transformers, relays, and industrial equipment. Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, manuals, and one-line diagrams. Basic understanding of electrical principles, including AC and DC circuits and electrical safety practices. Ability to use common electrical test tools such as meters, meggers, multimeters, and other diagnostic equipment. Proficiency with hand and power tools used in electrical installation and maintenance work. Capability to perform physical tasks, including lifting 50+ lbs, working at heights, in confined spaces, and outdoors in all weather conditions. Strong safety focus and adherence to lockout/tagout, grounding, PPE, switching, and other safety procedures. Attention to detail and accuracy in installation, testing, and documentation. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in team environments. Willingness and flexibility to support frequent overtime and weekend work based on site operational needs. Additional Skills & Qualifications Associate degree in electrical, mechanical, or industrial maintenance technology is preferred. Experience with substation maintenance and industrial electrical environments. Experience in generator systems, relay work, and industrial or military electrical settings is beneficial. Knowledge of print reading for drawings, manuals, and one-line diagrams. Ability to push and pull up to 75 lbs (unassisted) for 12 hours per day. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (unassisted) for 12 hours per day. Ability to stand for up to 6 hours per day and sit for up to 3 hours per day. Ability to walk for up to 3 hours per day and climb ladders or stairs for up to 3 hours per day. Ability to reach overhead and kneel or crouch for up to 3 hours per day. Ability to twist upper body for up to 6 hours per day. Ability to work in temperatures over 80 degrees for up to 3 hours per day. Capability to safely work at heights up to 500 feet and in confined spaces. Comfort working with high voltage while following all required safety protocols. Ability to work in environments with exposure to fumes, odors, and noise. Flexibility to rapidly change roles and responsibilities in a high-paced, challenging work environment. The environment can include exposure to fumes, odors, and noise, as well as temperatures above 80 degrees for portions of the day. Work involves standing, walking, climbing ladders and stairs, kneeling, overhead reaching, twisting, and lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs and pushing or pulling up to 75 lbs unassisted. The position requires working at heights up to 500 feet and in confined spaces, often around high-voltage equipment, while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and following strict safety procedures. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Brownsville, TX. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $55.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
