About Phinney Design Group Phinney Design Group (PDG) is a multidisciplinary architecture, interior design, and construction management firm with offices in Saratoga Springs and the Adirondacks. Our integrated approach allows our design and construction teams to work collaboratively from the earliest stages of a project through completion. We are seeking an experienced Construction Management Estimator to join our Construction Management team in Saratoga Springs. This position will play an important role in establishing project budgets, evaluating costs throughout the design process, coordinating subcontractor pricing, and supporting our project teams from preconstruction through construction. Position Overview The Construction Management Estimator will be responsible for preparing and maintaining accurate construction cost estimates for a variety of residential, commercial, and hospitality projects. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of construction means and methods, building systems, subcontractor scopes, and current market pricing. This position will work closely with PDG's architects, construction managers, project managers, consultants, subcontractors, and clients to provide meaningful cost information throughout the design and construction process. A successful candidate will be comfortable developing estimates at varying levels of design, from early conceptual budgets through detailed construction document estimates and subcontractor bid analysis. Responsibilities Prepare conceptual, schematic design, design development, and construction document cost estimates. Develop detailed quantity takeoffs and estimates organized by trade and construction division. Establish preliminary project budgets based on limited design information, historical project data, and current market conditions. Maintain and update project estimates as the design develops. Identify significant cost drivers, potential budget concerns, and opportunities for value management. Work directly with architects and project teams to understand design intent and evaluate cost implications. Prepare bid packages and clearly define subcontractor scopes of work. Solicit, review, and analyze subcontractor and supplier proposals. Perform bid leveling and identify scope gaps, exclusions, qualifications, and inconsistencies between proposals. Maintain relationships with subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers and assist in expanding PDG's bidding network. Develop and maintain internal historical cost data and current unit pricing. Assist Construction Management Project Managers with procurement, change order pricing, allowances, and cost forecasting during construction. Review drawings and specifications for constructability, scope coordination, and potential cost impacts. Participate in project and preconstruction meetings with clients, consultants, and internal project teams. Assist in developing project schedules, logistics plans, and general conditions estimates when appropriate. Clearly communicate assumptions, qualifications, and potential financial risks associated with each estimate. Develop multiple contract summaries in the specifications on commercial projects. Qualifications Professional experience in construction estimating, preconstruction, construction management, general contracting, or a related field. Strong knowledge of construction materials, building systems, means and methods, and typical trade scopes. Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings and specifications. Experience developing both conceptual and detailed construction estimates. Experience soliciting and evaluating subcontractor and supplier pricing. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively with architects, construction professionals, consultants, clients, and subcontractors. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and construction estimating or project management software. Familiarity with Bluebeam and construction management platforms is preferred. Preferred Experience Experience estimating custom residential, commercial, hospitality, or similarly detailed construction projects. Experience working for a construction manager or general contractor. Experience working collaboratively with architects during the design and preconstruction process. Knowledge of construction costs and subcontractor markets in Upstate New York and the Adirondack region. Experience with both renovation and new construction projects.
