Job Description

COMPANY OVERVIEW G.M.
McCrossin, Inc. is an AISC Certified Steel Erector and full-service general contractor based in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. For over 70 years, McCrossin has served the commercial and industrial construction markets throughout the Northeast, building a reputation on quality workmanship, competitive pricing, and reliable project delivery. Our estimating group prices the work we are best known for: water and wastewater treatment facilities, below-grade process structures, industrial plants, and institutional and campus construction. We self-perform concrete, structural steel erection, and process piping, which means our estimators price real McCrossin crews and production rates rather than assembling subcontractor numbers.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Project Estimator prepares complete, competitive bids for commercial, industrial, and municipal projects from initial drawing review through bid submission. You will perform quantity takeoffs, price self-performed and subcontracted scope, solicit and level supplier and subcontractor quotes, and assemble the final bid package. This role suits an estimator who is comfortable owning a bid end to end and who would rather understand how a structure gets built than simply fill in a spreadsheet. Estimators here work directly with project managers and field superintendents and see the projects they price get built.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform detailed quantity takeoffs from civil, structural, architectural, and mechanical process drawings Review plans, specifications, addenda, and bid documents to establish full scope and identify gaps, conflicts, and exclusions before bid day. Price self-performed work using company historical cost data, crew production rates, and recognized labor unit standards. Solicit, log, and level subcontractor and supplier quotations; confirm scope coverage and negotiate pricing. Build and maintain estimate workbooks in the company standard format, including detail, summary, and final bid recap sheets. Prepare quantity and pricing summaries for management bid review, and clearly present assumptions, risks, and alternates. Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits; document existing conditions and access constraints that affect cost. Assemble and submit complete bid packages, including bid forms, bonds, and required certifications, on schedule. Prepare and price change order proposals and value engineering alternatives on active projects. Perform bid-to-budget handoff with project management, and participate in post-bid and post-job cost reviews to improve future pricing. Maintain and improve estimating cost databases, assemblies, and historical unit costs. Track bid opportunities and results, and help manage the bid calendar.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Three to seven years of hands-on construction estimating experience with a general, mechanical, or heavy civil contractor. Demonstrated ability to perform accurate quantity takeoffs directly from construction drawings. Working proficiency with digital takeoff software (PlanSwift, On-Screen Takeoff, Bluebeam, or comparable). Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including working comfortably in formula-driven estimate workbooks. Solid understanding of CSI MasterFormat divisions, construction means and methods, and construction sequencing. Ability to read and interpret technical specifications and identify scope requirements and exclusions. Well organized and deadline-disciplined, with the judgment to keep multiple bids moving under firm due dates. Clear written and verbal communication with subcontractors, suppliers, owners, and design professionals. Preferred Experience estimating water or wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, or other below-grade process structures. Experience with self-performed concrete formwork, reinforcing steel, and cast-in-place placement. Familiarity with structural steel takeoff and erection pricing, including connections and misc. metals. Familiarity with process piping takeoff and MCAA labor units. Degree in construction management, civil or architectural engineering, or a related field. Experience with public bidding, prevailing wage projects, and PennDOT or municipal authority work.
