Job Description

About Generation Stoneworks Generation Stoneworks is a custom architectural stone fabrication company specializing in high-quality, made-to-order natural stonework for commercial, residential, restoration, and architectural projects. Our work is not mass production. Projects range from relatively straightforward customer price requests to complex architectural projects involving detailed drawings, specifications, custom profiles, finishes, and fabrication requirements. We work with contractors, architects, builders, and other customers to turn their requirements into accurately fabricated architectural stone. Our work combines traditional craftsmanship with modern fabrication methods, technical knowledge, problem solving, and attention to detail. The Opportunity We are looking for a Sales Estimator to join our team and develop into an important part of our sales and estimating operation. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is comfortable with numbers, enjoys problem solving and working with customers, and wants to build a career in a specialized industry. Previous stone industry experience is not required. Architectural stone estimating is a specialized skill, and we expect to train the right person. Training will cover our products, stone materials, fabrication processes, estimating methods, pricing systems, architectural drawings, and how projects move through our company. The position will begin with straightforward customer price requests where the customer has already provided the quantities, dimensions, profiles, or other information necessary to develop pricing. These projects provide an opportunity to learn our products, fabrication methods, pricing structure, and proposal process without initially having to perform detailed architectural drawing takeoffs. As knowledge and experience develop, the Sales Estimator will progress into reviewing architectural drawings and specifications, performing takeoffs, estimating more complex fabrication, and managing increasingly challenging projects. Initially, you will work closely with the President and our Drafting team. As your knowledge grows, you will take increasing ownership of estimates, proposals, customer communication, and sales opportunities. Our goal is to develop the right person into an estimator who can independently manage projects from the initial pricing request through proposal, award, and handoff to Drafting.
Responsibilities The Sales Estimator will:
Review incoming customer requests for pricing and determine what information is needed to prepare an estimate. Prepare pricing from customer-supplied quantities, dimensions, profiles, sketches, schedules, and other project information. Communicate with customers to clarify scope, dimensions, materials, finishes, quantities, and other requirements. Learn how different stone materials, profiles, finishes, dimensions, and fabrication methods affect cost. Prepare detailed estimates using Generation Stoneworks' estimating and pricing systems. Prepare clear, professional proposals for customers. Manage pricing revisions, alternates, addenda, and changes throughout the bidding process. Maintain accurate records of bids, proposals, revisions, and customer communication. Follow up on outstanding proposals and assist in developing customer relationships. As experience develops, review architectural drawings and specifications and perform quantity takeoffs. Identify project details that require additional technical review or clarification. Develop an understanding of labor, material, machine time, and other factors that affect project cost and profitability. Work closely with the Drafting Manager and drafting staff to review project details, profiles, dimensions, constructability, and fabrication requirements. Seek input from Drafting when a project requires technical interpretation or development beyond the information supplied by the customer. Assist with the transition of awarded projects from Sales/Estimating into Drafting. Clearly communicate the scope, assumptions, pricing information, customer requirements, and special conditions established during the estimating process to the Drafting team. Work with Drafting and Production to better understand fabrication capabilities and use that knowledge to improve future estimates. Take on increasing responsibility for customer communication, estimating, proposals, and sales opportunities as experience develops. Working With Drafting Sales/Estimating and Drafting work closely together at Generation Stoneworks. During the estimating process, the Sales Estimator may work with Drafting to better understand complicated profiles, details, dimensions, assemblies, or fabrication requirements. Once a project is awarded, the Sales Estimator helps ensure a clean transition into Drafting so that the information developed during the bidding process is not lost.
This includes communicating:
What was quoted Drawings and information used for pricing Proposal scope and exclusions Customer expectations Pricing assumptions Alternates and revisions Special materials or finishes Unusual fabrication requirements Important customer conversations or commitments The goal is to create a clear flow of information from Customer → Sales/Estimating → Drafting → Production . What We're Looking For We're less concerned with finding someone who already knows the stone industry and more interested in finding someone with the ability and desire to learn it.
The ideal candidate is:
Comfortable working with numbers and basic calculations. Detail-oriented and organized. Comfortable communicating directly with customers. Able to read or willing to learn how to read architectural drawings. Comfortable using computers, spreadsheets, and business software. Able to manage multiple pricing requests and deadlines simultaneously. A strong written and verbal communicator. Curious and willing to ask questions. Able to work collaboratively with Sales, Drafting, and Production. Able to think through problems rather than simply follow a checklist. Accountable for the accuracy and quality of their work. Interested in learning how products are actually manufactured and fabricated. Experience in estimating, construction, architecture, drafting, engineering, manufacturing, building materials, inside sales, or related fields is helpful but not required for the right candidate . Training & Development We don't expect someone to walk through the door knowing how to estimate custom architectural stone. The position is designed around a progressive training process.
Beginning:
Learn our products, stone materials, terminology, pricing system, and proposal process while pricing straightforward customer requests where quantities and project information are already provided.
Developing:
Learn profiles, finishes, fabrication processes, production equipment, labor requirements, and how different project characteristics affect cost.
Intermediate:
Begin reading architectural drawings, performing takeoffs, reviewing specifications, and independently estimating routine projects.
Advanced:
Manage more complex architectural projects, work directly with customers and Drafting to resolve technical questions, and take greater ownership of pricing and proposals. Training will include both office-based instruction and time in our production facility so the Sales Estimator can see firsthand how the stone being priced is fabricated. We believe understanding how the work is actually made is essential to becoming a strong estimator. Career Opportunity We are looking for someone who wants the opportunity to grow beyond an entry-level estimating position. As Generation Stoneworks grows, we want this position to grow with it. A successful Sales Estimator can progress through increasing levels of responsibility: Customer Price Requests → Estimating → Architectural Takeoffs → Proposals → Customer Relationships → Complex Projects → Sales & Estimating Leadership Compensation growth will be tied to demonstrated ability to independently manage estimates, produce accurate proposals, understand our fabrication processes, communicate effectively with customers and coworkers, and take ownership of increasingly complex projects. For the right person, this position offers an opportunity to develop specialized knowledge combining construction, architecture, manufacturing, estimating, and sales .
Compensation Starting base salary:
$50,000-$55,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications, plus company benefits. Compensation will be reviewed as the employee develops the ability to independently price projects and assumes greater responsibility within the sales and estimating function. Why Generation Stoneworks? This is an opportunity to learn a specialized industry from people who work with architectural stone every day. You'll have the opportunity to see a project develop from an initial customer request or architectural drawing into an estimate, proposal, shop drawing, raw stone, fabrication, finishing, and ultimately a completed architectural project. For someone who enjoys learning, problem solving, working with customers, construction, architecture, manufacturing, and seeing the tangible results of their work, this position offers the opportunity to build a long-term career in a unique industry.
