Job Description

Summary of Position The experienced industrial insulator plays a vital role in ensuring the proper installation and maintenance of insulation systems while prioritizing safety above all else. Employees in this trade may have the opportunity to participate in a paid insulation apprenticeship program, gaining valuable hands-on training and industry knowledge. The ideal candidate takes pride in completing work efficiently and safely. They possess excellent leadership and team management skills, clear written and verbal communication, and keen attention to detail. Duties Install, remove, and repair insulation on industrial equipment, pipes, ductwork, and mechanical systems—including heat exchangers, tanks, and vessels—to regulate temperature and minimize noise. Seal and finish insulated surfaces or access points using plastic covers, strips, sealants, tape, cement, or asphalt mastic for durability and protection. Assess project requirements to determine the appropriate type, quantity, and installation method for insulation, considering location, surface shape, and equipment usage. Customize insulation to fit around obstructions, shaping materials and protective coverings as needed to ensure proper coverage. Secure insulation by installing sheet metal around insulated pipes using screws, safeguarding against environmental elements and physical damage. Accurately measure and cut insulation materials using tape measures, handsaws, knives, and scissors to achieve precise application. Prepare surfaces for insulation installation by applying adhesives, cement, or asphalt, or by affixing metal pins for reinforcement. Review and interpret blueprints and technical specifications to align insulation work with project requirements. Select appropriate insulation materials—such as fiberglass or Styrofoam—based on their heat retention and exclusion properties to enhance system efficiency. Evenly distribute insulation materials into confined spaces within floors, ceilings, and walls using blowers, hose attachments, or cement mortar. Maintain flexibility and readiness to travel as needed to support various job sites and project demands. Requirements High school diploma or GED required. OSHA 10 certification and other relevant industry certifications preferred. Prior insulation experience preferred; a minimum of two years of experience required to lead a crew. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment. Strong organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail and accuracy. Effective oral and written communication skills for clear coordination and reporting. Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. safely. Comfortable working at heights, maintaining balance and awareness. Ability to remain on your feet throughout the workday, adapting to various physical demands.
