The Welding Assistant/Apprentice supports experienced welders in performing welding and fabrication tasks related to road construction projects. This role involves preparing materials, maintaining equipment, and learning welding techniques while ensuring a safe and efficient work environment. The Welding Assistant/Apprentice will support the branch locations and can work in various locations including outdoor job sites with exposure to weather, dust, noise, and heavy equipment. This position may require travel to various road construction locations. and may include early mornings, nights, or overtime depending on project demands.
Essential Job Functions:
Includes, but is not limited to, the job specifications contained herein. Additional duties or job functions may be required as deemed necessary by management personnel to contribute to the team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Assist welders with setup and operation of welding equipment (MIG, TIG, Stick). Prepare materials for welding, including cleaning, cutting, and fitting metal components. Hold or position materials during welding using clamps, jigs, or other tools. Grind, chip, and clean welds to remove slag and ensure smooth finishes. Load and unload materials, tools, and equipment at job sites. Maintain and organize tools, equipment, and work areas. Follow all safety procedures and wear appropriate PPE at all times. Support fabrication and repair of road construction equipment (e.g., guardrails, rebar, heavy machinery components). Perform basic maintenance on welding tools and equipment. Learn to read blueprints and welding diagrams under supervision. Assist in site cleanup and general labor tasks as needed. What's In It for You? Requirements:
Adhere to OSHA and company safety standards. Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including helmet, gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toe boots. Awareness of hazards such as hot materials, sparks, and heavy machinery. Strong work ethic and reliability. Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Good hand-eye coordination and attention to detail. Physical ability to lift 50+ lbs, stand for long periods, and perform manual labor. Basic knowledge of hand and power tools. High school diploma or GED preferred. Interest in welding, construction, or skilled trades. Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn. Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team. Previous construction or labor experience is a plus but not required.
