Job Summary We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Structural Welder (6GR) to join our dynamic shipyard team. In this role, you will be responsible for executing precise welding operations on structural steel components in the 6G position, which involves welding in a fixed position with the pipe or plate at a 45-degree angle. Your expertise will ensure the integrity and safety of large-scale metal structures, adhering strictly to industry standards and safety protocols. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on complex projects that demand technical excellence, mechanical knowledge, and a keen eye for detail. Must live in the local commuting area of the Weeks Marine Bourg Shipyard. Must have previous shipyard experience. Duties Perform welding on structural steel components using various techniques including FCAW, MIG, TIG, and SMAW in the 6G fixed position, ensuring compliance with AWS standards and ASME codes. Interpret mechanical blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and welding symbols to accurately assemble and fabricate metal structures. Measure and mark materials using calipers, micrometers, measuring instruments, and shop math to ensure precise cuts and welds. Prepare surfaces through plasma cutting, grinding, or other methods before welding; utilize power tools and hand tools safely and effectively. Rigging and pipe threading as needed for assembly; operate machinery such as press brake machines or plasma cutters for fabrication tasks. Maintain strict adherence to safety protocols including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), forklift operation when necessary, and compliance with OSHA standards. Conduct quality inspections using calipers, micrometers, and other measuring instruments to verify weld quality and dimensional accuracy; document inspection results thoroughly. Collaborate with team members on fabrication shop projects involving sheet metal fabrication, ductwork assembly, or mechanical fabrication tasks. Follow schematics and technical drawings meticulously to ensure accurate assembly of structural components in accordance with project specifications. Skills Extensive construction site experience with a strong understanding of safety procedures and site protocols. Proficiency in multiple welding techniques including FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding), MIG (Metal Inert Gas), TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas), SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), and gas metal arc welding.

IMPORTANT

Must have a produce a valid 6GR certification or pass a pre-employment 6GR test. Ability to read blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and interpret mechanical blueprints accurately. Skilled in measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, shop math, and schematic interpretation for precise fabrication work. Mechanical knowledge related to metal fabrication processes including sheet metal fabrication, pipe threading, rigging, machining, soldering, and assembly. Familiarity with construction site experience involving ductwork installation or structural steel erection is preferred. Experience operating power tools like press brake machines, plasma cutters, grinders, drills, and other fabrication equipment safely. Knowledge of ASME codes & standards along with AWS standards for welding quality assurance. Strong understanding of safety protocols including proper handling of metal materials and use of PPE at all times.
