Assignment Length:

Professional Background:

Candidates must possess a minimum of four years of professional experience as a first-class Shipfitter within naval or commercial sectors.

Core Competencies:

Execute multi-pass tack welding tasks. Operate oxygen/propane torches for burning applications. Utilize oxygen/propane torches for heating purposes. Interpret intricate structural assembly sketches, blueprints, and technical drawings, including weld symbols, material specifications, and reference lines. Demonstrate proficiency in calculating fractional dimensions using standard measuring tools. Perform precise layout of components for fabrication and assembly processes. Ensure structural components are assembled to meet high-quality standards and project specifications. Thrive in a physically demanding industrial setting, such as steel fabrication or shipbuilding. Maintain compliance with all relevant OSHA safety standards for the maritime industry. Operate various vibratory equipment, including needle guns and grinders. Perform air carbon arc gouging operations. Utilize technical drawings and work packages to effectively plan and complete assignments. Apply ship reference lines and molded lines to ensure accurate project execution. Erect, position, and secure complex shell plates to support vessel integrity. Assemble and install essential structural elements like bulkheads, decks, and longitudinals. Install and replace hull penetrations and inserts, as well as complex foundations, to ensure structural reliability.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with material handling or rigging. Proficiency in using optical instruments like transits or levels. Background in shipwright or erection and setting tasks. Knowledge of tank testing procedures. Certification or experience operating mobile equipment, such as scissor lifts or JLGs.

Welding Assessment:

Upon arrival, all incoming Shipfitters are required to successfully complete a Multi-Pass Tack Welder Qualification exam.

Assessment Details:

The evaluation utilizes the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) method. Testing requires the use of

MIL-10718-M

(A-5A) filler metal compliant with

MIL-E-22200/1

standards. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in both Overhead (4F) and Vertical Up (3F) welding positions. The testing process includes one hour of practice, followed by one-hour sessions for both Vertical and Overhead testing, concluding with a six-hour Level I visual weld inspection.
