Shop & Field Position Pay Range:

$20.00-$28.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications About the Position Aven Fire Systems is seeking a dependable, mechanically capable Fire Extinguisher Technician / Shop Technician to support our portable fire extinguisher operation. This position combines hands-on shop work with field service . The technician will inspect, service, recharge, repair and process portable fire extinguishers while helping maintain an organized and efficient extinguisher shop. The position also includes customer-site inspections, extinguisher pickup and delivery, documentation, inventory control and maintaining accurate records as equipment moves through the shop. Previous fire extinguisher experience is preferred, but we are willing to train the right person who has strong mechanical ability, attention to detail and a desire to learn the fire-protection industry. What You'll Be DoingFire Extinguisher Service Inspect portable fire extinguishers at customer locations and in the shop Perform annual fire extinguisher maintenance and inspection Identify extinguishers requiring recharge, repair, replacement, internal maintenance or hydrostatic testing Recharge portable fire extinguishers in accordance with manufacturer requirements and applicable standards Perform six-year internal maintenance on applicable dry-chemical extinguishers Disassemble, clean, inspect, repair and reassemble extinguisher components as required Replace valves, hoses, nozzles, O-rings, gauges, pull pins, tamper seals, brackets and other service components as required Verify proper extinguisher weight and charge Perform required leak checks following service and recharge Clean extinguishers and return completed equipment to professional service condition Properly identify and remove condemned, obsolete or non-serviceable equipment from service Install new extinguishers, cabinets, brackets and signage when assigned Maintain accurate service tags, labels and equipment records Follow NFPA 10, manufacturer instructions and company procedures Shop Operations Receive incoming customer extinguishers and accurately record customer, quantity, type and requested service Tag and organize incoming equipment so customer units remain properly identified throughout the service process Track equipment from intake → inspection → service → completion → billing/return Maintain clearly organized areas for incoming, in-process, completed and condemned equipment Keep accurate counts of units received, completed and returned Identify parts or replacement extinguishers needed to complete open work Notify the appropriate office employee when parts, approvals or customer information are preventing completion Maintain extinguisher parts and agent inventory Monitor minimum stock levels for frequently used service parts Receive and organize shop materials and extinguisher inventory Maintain service equipment, recharge equipment, tools and work areas Keep the extinguisher shop clean, safe and organized Assist with preparing completed customer orders for pickup or delivery Make sure completed work is properly documented so it can be billed promptly Help identify overdue equipment or jobs that have stalled in the shop Field Service Travel to commercial and industrial customer locations to perform extinguisher inspections and service Identify missing, damaged, discharged, improperly mounted or otherwise deficient extinguishers Verify proper extinguisher type and placement within the limits of the technician's training Replace inspection tags and required service labels Install or replace extinguisher brackets and cabinets when assigned Pick up extinguishers requiring shop service and provide appropriate temporary/replacement units when directed Return completed extinguishers to customer locations Obtain accurate customer acknowledgments and complete service documentation Communicate deficiencies and equipment needs clearly to the office Maintain an organized company vehicle and appropriate field inventory when operating a service route Additional Equipment Depending on experience and training, this position may also assist with: Kitchen fire-suppression equipment Fire-extinguisher cabinets and accessories Fire-protection equipment deliveries Other inspection and service work within Aven Fire Systems' operations Additional training can be provided as the employee develops. What We're Looking ForRequired Reliable attendance and strong work ethic Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with tools Strong attention to detail Ability to follow established procedures consistently Ability to accurately track customer-owned equipment Ability to complete paperwork and electronic service documentation Comfortable communicating professionally with customers Ability to work independently after training Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record High school diploma or equivalent Ability to safely lift and carry portable fire extinguishers and related equipment Preferred Previous fire-extinguisher inspection or service experience Previous fire-protection industry experience Knowledge of NFPA 10 Experience performing fire extinguisher recharge Experience performing six-year maintenance Experience handling hydrostatic-test equipment or coordinating hydrostatic testing Experience with ABC dry chemical, BC dry chemical, CO2, Class K, water and clean-agent extinguishers Previous service-route experience Mechanical, automotive, maintenance, warehouse or skilled-trade experience Previous experience maintaining parts inventory or working in a service shop Fire extinguisher experience is preferred but not required for the right candidate . Someone with strong mechanical ability, organization and accountability can be trained. The Person We're Looking For This job requires somebody who notices details. An extinguisher cannot disappear into the shop without anyone knowing whose it is. A unit cannot sit unfinished for three weeks because a part was never ordered. Completed equipment cannot remain on the rack because nobody notified the customer. Service cannot be performed without accurate documentation. We're looking for someone who takes ownership of the equipment moving through their area and understands that completing the physical service is only part of the job. A successful technician will keep work moving from the moment equipment enters the shop until it is completed, documented, billed and returned to the customer. Physical Requirements This is an active, hands-on position.
