Underground Utilities Excavator Operator Central Civil Construction South Florida | Full-Time | Field Position Experienced Underground Utility Excavator Operator Central Civil Construction is seeking an experienced Underground Utilities Excavator Operator to join our Pipe Division. Since 1977, Central Civil has been building South Florida's infrastructure through complex heavy civil construction, underground utilities, earthwork, roadway, airport, seaport, commercial, and public infrastructure projects. This position requires previous underground utility excavation experience. We are specifically looking for an experienced operator who understands the precision, communication, and safety awareness required when excavating for underground pipe and working around existing utilities and personnel. What You'll Do Operate excavators for the installation of underground water, sewer, storm drainage, and other utility systems . Excavate trenches to required lines, grades, depths, and elevations. Perform deep excavations safely and efficiently. Work closely with Pipe Foremen, Pipelayers, Laborers, and other equipment operators during utility installation. Excavate around existing underground utilities while maintaining required clearances and protecting existing infrastructure. Assist with setting and removing trench boxes, shoring systems, and other protective systems as directed. Dig around structures, manholes, drainage systems, existing pipe, and other underground infrastructure. Assist with setting pipe, structures, boxes, and other materials using the excavator when required. Maintain proper trench width, depth, slope, and working area for the pipe crew. Perform backfilling and assist with proper placement of materials around installed utilities. Load trucks and move excavated or imported materials as required. Perform grading and other excavation activities associated with underground utility construction. Understand and follow grade stakes, markings, elevations, and directions provided by supervision and survey personnel. Perform daily equipment inspections and immediately report defects or maintenance concerns. Maintain equipment in a clean and safe operating condition. Follow project-specific safety requirements, JHAs, excavation procedures, and company policies. Perform additional heavy civil construction duties as required. Required Qualifications Minimum 3-5 years of excavator operating experience in underground utility construction preferred. Demonstrated experience excavating for water, sewer, storm drainage, or similar underground utility systems . Experience working in and around deep excavations. Strong understanding of underground utility construction and pipe installation operations. Experience working around existing utilities and congested underground conditions. Ability to excavate accurately to line and grade. Experience handling pipe, structures, trench boxes, and construction materials with an excavator. Knowledge of safe excavation and trenching practices. Ability to understand hand signals and communicate effectively with spotters, Pipelayers, Foremen, and other crew members. Ability to safely operate equipment in tight and congested construction areas. Ability to perform daily equipment inspections and recognize potential mechanical or safety concerns. Must be dependable, punctual, and able to report to assigned projects throughout South Florida. Valid driver's license preferred. Ability to work outdoors in South Florida weather and physically demanding construction environments. Underground Utility Experience Is Important We are not looking for an operator whose experience is limited to loading trucks, clearing land, or general earthwork. The successful candidate must understand how to operate an excavator as part of an underground pipe crew .
You should be comfortable working:
Around Pipelayers and Laborers inside protected excavations. Around existing underground utilities. With trench boxes and protective systems. In deep and confined excavation areas. Around live construction operations and heavy equipment. With tight tolerances for line, grade, and elevation. Under the direction of an experienced Pipe Foreman or Superintendent. Operating safely around employees working near the machine is an essential responsibility of this position. Safety Is a Condition of Employment Central Civil takes excavation and trenching safety seriously. Operators are expected to follow all company safety procedures and project-specific requirements and must never compromise employee safety for production.
The successful candidate must:
Complete required equipment inspections before operation. Follow excavation and trenching safety requirements. Maintain constant awareness of employees working around the machine. Follow spotter and signaling procedures. Respect underground utility markings and required tolerances. Never enter or allow employees to enter an excavation when required protective systems are not properly in place. Immediately stop work and notify supervision when an unsafe condition exists.
