This position performs manual labor and equipment operation to complete road repairs, snow removal, and other assignments and to assist with overall division operations.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be required and assigned. Not all duties may be assigned to each position. The allocation of duties for this position will be dependent upon the department/division assigned and qualification of assigned work/equipment. Duties assigned to Operator I / II Safely operates heavy and light construction equipment, machinery, and tools for maintenance and construction related operations. Performs general road maintenance and related activities including flagging traffic, mowing, temporary and permanent asphalt surface repairs, patching holes, sawing pavement, concrete repair and pouring, clearing brush and trees, vegetation control, sweeping, routing and sealing road cracks, and removing dead animals and trash. Sprays herbicides/pesticides to control weeds/mosquitoes on City property. Maintains ditches, waterways, and storm drains for proper drainage. Assist with maintenance of street signage and signal lights. Cleans, lubricates, and performs preventive maintenance or repair on equipment. Performs snow removal operations. Installs sandbags for emergency flood control. Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all safety regulations; ensures all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed. Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority. Follows all policies for reporting. Provides backup assistance to other department personnel as needed. Maintains appropriate records including complete equipment repair history, work orders, daily job card, and other related data. Completes written records of labor and materials used for each work project. Performs emergency repairs and work as necessary. Reports to work for after hour needs, as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma/equivalent with two (2) years' of related work experience and operating trucks and heavy equipment
- Valid Class A CDL, or must obtain within six (6) months of hire o Manual transmission restriction (E) allowed o No endorsements required for this position
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Basic mechanical ability
- Welding/fabrication experience
- Work zone safety proficiency
- MSHA and Hazmat certification
- First Aid and CPR certification
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- South Dakota Commercial Pesticide Applicator License
- Must reside within 15 miles of the Watertown Regional Airport within six (6) months of hire Operator II - Streets
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma/equivalent with eight (8) years' of related work experience and operating trucks and heavy equipment
- Valid Class A CDL upon hire o Manual transmission restriction (E) allowed o Must obtain Tanker endorsement (N or X) within six (6) months of hire
- Proficiency in operating all street maintenance equipment to include, but not limited to, a Street sweeper, motor grader, asphalt spray patcher, distributor truck, brine truck, loader mounted snow blower
- Knowledge of City's maintenance operational needs and procedures such as flood mitigation, snow removal operations, Emergency Snow Routes, locating addresses and street maintenance needs, sand/salt and brine mixing, roadway repair, street sweeping, and herbicide/pesticide spraying
- Entry level knowledge of roadway signage/painting, signal light maintenance, and the
MUTCD PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Associates degree in engineering, construction, heavy equipment operator, or related field
- Moderate mechanical ability
- Welding/fabrication experience
- Work zone safety proficiency
- MSHA and Hazmat certification
- First Aid and CPR certification
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
