Job Description
Job Description SSP Industries, LP is seeking a Backhoe Operator who can also serve as a backup Excavator Operator when needed. This position plays a key role in our utility and plumbing operations and requires someone who can operate equipment safely, efficiently, and keep production moving on active job sites. This is not a sit-and-wait position. Operators are expected to stay productive, assist the crew when needed, and take ownership of their equipment and work. Duties/Responsibilities Operate backhoe for trenching, excavation, backfilling, and material handling Serve as backup excavator operator as needed across multiple job sites Perform tasks such as digging trenches, setting grade, and exposing existing utilities Backfill excavations and assist with compaction and site cleanup Read and follow grade stakes, plans, and hand signals to ensure accuracy Assist with loading, unloading, and movement of materials around the job site Conduct daily equipment inspections and identify maintenance or repair needs Maintain equipment in clean and working condition Follow instructions from supervisors while also staying ahead of crew needs Assist ground crew when equipment operation is not required Maintain a safe and clean work environment Perform other related duties as assigned Required Skills/Abilities Proven ability to operate a backhoe (required) Experience operating an excavator (preferred) Strong understanding of trenching, grading, and underground utility work Ability to read and follow excavation plans and grade markers Good decision-making and awareness in active job site conditions Strong time management and ability to keep work moving efficiently Mechanical awareness for basic equipment troubleshooting Ability to work as part of a team while staying self-directed Valid Driver's License Safety Promote, execute, and adhere to SSP safety program Wear proper PPE at all times OSHA 10-Hour preferred Attend regular safety meetings Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent required Minimum 2+ years of backhoe experience preferred Experience in utility or plumbing construction strongly preferred Physical Requirements Ability to perform physically demanding work Ability to lift and carry heavy objects Strong hand-eye-foot coordination and balance Ability to kneel, crouch, and work in confined or awkward spaces Benefits 401(k) with 3% match Health, dental, and vision insurance Life insurance Paid time off Retirement plan Work Location In person - Killeen, TX 76541 Must be able to commute or relocate prior to start
