The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is currently seeking a Motor Equipment Operator I / Deckhand to perform a variety of duties and maintenance tasks associated with the Dredge Operations group, such as: Connect and disconnect dredge pipelines as needed. Assist with winch cable installation and moving dredge equipment. Assist with cleaning debris and resolving pipeline blockages. Assist with placing, removing, and burying the pipeline. Assist with Navigational Aid inventory and maintenance. Perform deckhand duties on all vessels, including handling lines and cables, preparing and securing lines for towing and docking, and assisting with setting or retrieving anchors. Perform labor and maintenance tasks associated with the City Dredge, discharge piping, and related equipment, including lifting and moving heavy equipment. Clean, prep, and paint dredge machinery and support equipment; perform related tasks as needed. Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements of the position. Complete assignments as directed by the supervisor based on workload and departmental needs. Follow instructions precisely and work diligently to achieve assigned objectives. Communicate professionally and respectfully with citizens, coworkers, and supervisors.Work Schedule:

Fri. 6:30 am- 9:00 pm; Sat. 6:30 am
- 8:00 pm; Sun. 6:30 am
- 8:30 pm
Memorial Day-Labor Day:
Fri. 3:30 pm- 6:00 am; Sat. 3:30 pm
- 5:00 am; Sun. 3:30 pm
- 5:00 am or Labor Day

12:00 am-10:30 am- Employee will receive an additional 5% shift differential for Memorial Day-Labor Day.
- Mandatory pre-employment physical.
- Must possess a valid Driver's License (VA or NC)
- CDL preferred; however, not required. Candidates who possess a valid CDL will qualify for a $2,000 incentive (stipend or bonus)
- This position is ALPHA I and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes, snow, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:
Requires completion of tenth (10th) grade, plus one (1) year of experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, such as motor equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver's license.Special Requirements:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. May require a Commercial Drivers license. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee's supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.Skills :
