 Performance-Based Bonuses About the Role TAF Construction is looking for a Steel Erection Team Lead to take ownership of our steel erection crews and lead the field execution of high-profile pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) projects across Utah. This is not a sit-behind-a-desk construction management position. This is a hands-on leadership role for an experienced steel erector who knows how to build, knows how to lead, and takes pride in getting the job done safely, correctly, and efficiently. As a Team Lead with TAF Construction, you will be responsible for leading a crew through the erection of PEMB structures from the ground up. You will direct daily field operations, coordinate manpower and materials, oversee structural steel erection, roof and wall panel installation, trim, equipment operation, rigging, and other building activities while maintaining TAF's standards for Safety, Quality, and Production. You will be the primary leader in the field and will be expected to set the standard for the crew. Your crew will look to you for direction, problem-solving, accountability, and leadership. You will be responsible for keeping the project moving while ensuring that every member of the crew understands what needs to be done and does it correctly. Some days will involve setting steel and managing crane picks. Other days may involve panels, trim, equipment operation, material coordination, inspections, troubleshooting, or solving unexpected problems in the field. We are looking for someone who can lead from the front—someone who is willing to get in the work with their crew, but who can also step back, see the bigger picture, and keep the entire operation moving. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage a steel erection crew through the safe and efficient completion of PEMB projects. Direct daily field operations and assign responsibilities to crew members based on project needs, experience, and production requirements. Lead the erection and installation of pre-engineered metal buildings, including structural steel, secondary framing, roof panels, wall panels, trim, insulation, and other building components. Read and interpret erection drawings, construction plans, details, specifications, and manufacturer instructions to ensure work is completed correctly. Plan daily work activities and coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and sequencing to keep the project moving efficiently. Direct and participate in rigging, connecting, setting, aligning, and securing structural steel and other building components. Coordinate crane picks, equipment operation, material staging, and other critical field activities. Ensure crew members understand the proper installation procedures and expectations before work begins. Train, coach, and develop less-experienced steel erectors and help establish a culture of continuous improvement within the crew. Monitor daily production and work with the crew to meet or exceed established production goals. Identify obstacles, material shortages, damaged components, drawing conflicts, and other issues that could affect production and communicate them to management immediately. Coordinate with general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, crane operators, equipment operators, and other job-site personnel as necessary. Inspect completed work throughout the project to ensure installation meets TAF Construction's quality standards and project requirements. Ensure tools, equipment, rigging, ladders, lifts, and personal protective equipment are properly inspected and used correctly. Enforce TAF Construction's safety policies and procedures and maintain a strong culture of accountability on the crew. Conduct or participate in daily safety meetings, job hazard assessments, and other required safety activities. Stop work when an unsafe condition exists and take immediate action to correct safety concerns. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site throughout the project. Track and communicate daily crew production, manpower, material needs, equipment needs, and project progress. Represent TAF Construction professionally when interacting with general contractors, customers, suppliers, inspectors, and other job-site personnel. Travel to different job sites throughout Central Utah and other areas of the state as projects require. Work long days and extended hours when necessary to keep projects on schedule. Qualifications Previous experience in steel erection and/or PEMB installation is required. Previous experience leading a steel erection crew, construction crew, or similar field operation is strongly preferred. Strong understanding of pre-engineered metal building erection, structural steel, secondary framing, metal roofing, wall panels, trim, and related construction processes. Ability to read and interpret erection drawings, construction plans, details, and specifications. Strong understanding of rigging practices, crane operations, fall protection, and safe steel erection procedures. Ability to safely operate or direct the operation of lifts, telehandlers, forklifts, and other construction equipment. Ability to read a tape measure and accurately understand dimensions, elevations, and building layouts. Strong understanding of hand tools, power tools, rigging equipment, and construction equipment. Ability to identify problems in the field and develop practical solutions without compromising safety or quality. Ability to effectively communicate instructions and expectations to crew members. Ability to hold crew members accountable while maintaining a productive and respectful working environment. Strong organizational skills and the ability to plan and prioritize daily work. Ability and willingness to safely work at heights and in physically demanding environments. Ability to lift 75+ lbs and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods of time. Must be willing to work outdoors in changing weather conditions. Must be willing to travel between job sites as required. Reliable transportation to designated meeting locations or job sites is required. OSHA, fall protection, rigging, crane signaling, or other relevant construction certifications are a plus. Previous experience training or mentoring less-experienced employees is a plus. What We Expect from Our Team Leads At TAF, being a good steel erector isn't enough to be a great Team Lead. Safety Comes First We expect every employee to go home in the same condition they came to work in. As a Team Lead, you are responsible for setting that standard every day. You are expected to recognize hazards, plan work safely, enforce fall protection, inspect equipment, and speak up when something isn't right. Production never comes before safety. Quality Matters We don't believe in doing something twice because we were too lazy or careless to do it right the first time. A Team Lead is responsible for making sure work is installed correctly the first time and that problems are identified and corrected before they become bigger problems. We take pride in the buildings we put up and the work we leave behind. Production Matters A Team Lead must understand how to keep a crew productive. That means knowing what needs to happen next, having materials and equipment ready, keeping people working, identifying bottlenecks, and solving problems before they bring the crew to a stop. You will be expected to understand daily production expectations and take ownership of getting your crew there. Leadership Matters You aren't just the best erector on the crew—you are responsible for making the entire crew better. We expect our Team Leads to teach, coach, communicate, hold people accountable, and lead by example. If someone on your crew is struggling, you don't simply work around them. You help make them better. If someone is doing something unsafe, you address it. If someone is doing excellent work, you recognize it. We want leaders who people respect because they are competent, fair, hardworking, and willing to get in the trenches with their crew. Ownership Matters We want Team Leads who treat the project like it is their own. Don't wait for someone else to notice a problem. See it. Communicate it. Solve it. If materials are missing, communicate it. If equipment isn't working, address it. If the crew is falling behind, figure out why. If something isn't safe, stop and fix it.
