Job Title:
Assistant Project Engineer (Emerging Engineer, 2-5 Years Experience) Job Description This role offers an emerging engineer the opportunity to independently manage small to mid-sized projects across commercial, industrial, multifamily, education, and data center markets. You will combine field and office work, take ownership of scope, schedule, budget, and reporting, and work directly with clients on a regular basis. This position is ideal for a motivated engineer with a background in materials testing, geotechnical, or construction-related engineering who enjoys problem-solving, building relationships, and leading projects early in their career. Responsibilities + Manage small to mid-sized projects in commercial, industrial, multifamily, education, and data center sectors from initiation through completion. + Take ownership of project scope, ensuring that technical requirements and client expectations are clearly defined and met. + Develop and maintain project schedules, track progress, and adjust plans to keep work on time and within budget. + Monitor and manage project budgets, including tracking costs, forecasting needs, and supporting financial reporting. + Prepare clear, accurate, and timely project reports, including technical findings, recommendations, and progress updates. + Coordinate and lead project teams, ensuring effective communication between field staff, office staff, and other stakeholders. + Serve as a primary client-facing contact, building strong relationships and maintaining regular communication on project status, issues, and next steps. + Conduct and oversee field work related to construction materials testing and related engineering tasks, ensuring quality and compliance with project specifications. + Identify and resolve project issues proactively, using strong problem-solving skills to address technical and logistical challenges. + Collaborate with internal teams to plan resources, allocate tasks, and ensure that project deliverables meet quality standards. + Support and enforce safety and quality standards during field and office project activities. + Take initiative to improve project processes, contribute ideas, and drive continuous improvement in project delivery. Essential Skills + 2-5 years of experience as an engineer in materials testing, geotechnical, or construction-related engineering. + Bachelor's degree in engineering or a closely related engineering discipline. + Engineer-in-Training (EIT/EI) certification preferred; Professional Engineer (PE) license not required. + Hands-on experience in construction materials testing or a strong construction materials background. + Demonstrated project management experience, including exposure to managing scope, schedule, and budget. + Strong client communication skills, with the ability to interact confidently and professionally in a client-facing role. + Proven problem-solving abilities, with a track record of addressing technical and project challenges effectively. + Ability to work independently, take initiative, and run projects with minimal supervision. + Comfort working in both field and office environments. + Experience with commercial and industrial projects or similar construction-related projects. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Engineer-in-Training (EIT/EI) certification with 2+ years of engineering experience is strongly preferred. + Experience in multifamily, education, or data center projects is beneficial. + Familiarity with American Concrete Institute (ACI) standards and practices is a plus. + background with construction materials testing laboratories or consulting environments is advantageous. + Exposure to coordinating multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders on engineering projects. + Interest in taking early leadership responsibility and growing into broader project management roles. + Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation and reporting. Work Environment This position offers a mix of field and office work with primarily local travel to project sites. You will regularly work on active construction sites, performing or overseeing construction materials testing and related engineering activities, and then transition to the office to complete reporting, coordination, and project management tasks. Company vehicles are provided for work-related travel to and from project sites, though they are not assigned as take-home vehicles. The work environment emphasizes safety, professionalism, and collaboration, with exposure to a wide variety of project types and market sectors that support continuous learning and career growth. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Raleigh, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $43.25 - $50.50/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
