Job Title:
Boiler Operator - 2nd Shift Job Description The Boiler Operator on 2nd shift is responsible for the safe, reliable operation and maintenance of boilers and related utility systems that support hospital operations. This role ensures uninterrupted steam, heating, and energy services that are essential for patient care, infection control, and life‑safety systems in a healthcare environment. Will go permanent after 520 hours and will be working in a hospital environment. Will be working from M-F ( 3pm-11pm) Pay $30-36 an hour Responsibilities Operate, monitor, and maintain low‑ and high‑pressure boilers, steam systems, and auxiliary utility equipment to support continuous hospital operations. Perform routine inspections and readings of boiler pressures, temperatures, fuel usage, and water chemistry, and accurately document all log readings. Conduct regular water testing and adjust water treatment systems to maintain proper boiler water quality and protect equipment. Respond promptly to alarms, system irregularities, and emergency conditions to minimize downtime and maintain safe operation. Perform preventive maintenance and assist with corrective maintenance on boilers, pumps, valves, burners, and related mechanical equipment. Support central utility plant operations, including coordination with chillers, chill water systems, HVAC systems, domestic hot water systems, and other auxiliary utility systems. Inspect and maintain boiler safety devices, controls, and instrumentation to ensure safe and compliant operation. Follow and enforce lockout/tagout, confined space, and other safety protocols required in a healthcare and life‑safety environment. Ensure compliance with hospital safety procedures, OSHA requirements, and readiness standards related to regulatory and accreditation bodies. Monitor and interpret gauges, meters, alarms, and monitoring systems, and take appropriate action based on readings and trends. Use maintenance procedures and equipment manuals to troubleshoot issues and perform repairs or escalate as needed. Document all maintenance activities, inspections, repairs, and readings clearly and accurately in logs and maintenance systems. Communicate equipment status, issues, and repair needs clearly with Facilities and Engineering teams to support coordinated plant operations. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe boiler room, mechanical spaces, and central plant areas at all times. Assist with general facilities maintenance tasks related to boilers, water systems, and chill water systems as needed. Essential Skills High school diploma or GED. Previous experience operating boilers in a hospital, healthcare, or other critical‑care facility preferred. Strong working knowledge of steam systems, boiler safety devices, and control instrumentation. Demonstrated skill in operating and monitoring low‑ and high‑pressure boilers, steam distribution systems, condensate return systems, pumps, valves, and burners. Experience supporting central plant and utility systems, including boilers, chillers, HVAC systems, domestic hot water systems, and auxiliary utility equipment. Proven ability to perform preventive maintenance, routine inspections, log readings, water testing, and respond to alarms or equipment failures. Knowledge of boiler safety practices, including lockout/tagout procedures, confined space entry, and safety requirements in healthcare and life‑safety environments. Ability to read and interpret gauges, meters, alarms, equipment manuals, and facility documentation. Ability to accurately document readings, maintenance activities, and equipment conditions in logs and maintenance records. Strong troubleshooting skills for boilers, chillers, water systems, and related mechanical and control equipment. Willingness and ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on‑call schedules as needed. Physical ability to stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, work in mechanical rooms, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in hot, confined, or noisy environments. Additional Skills & Qualifications Stationary Engineer or Boiler Operator license, as required by local or state regulations. Experience operating high‑pressure boilers in a hospital or similar environment. Familiarity with plant monitoring systems and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS). Prior exposure to regulatory or accreditation surveys and hospital compliance inspections. Knowledge of common licenses and permits used in Texas hospitals, such as municipal Stationary Engineer licenses and Boiler Operator permits where applicable. Understanding of boiler registration and inspection practices, including annual inspection requirements. Background in facilities maintenance, stationary engineering, boiler maintenance, and maintenance repair. Experience working with boiler water systems and chill water systems. Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with Facilities and Engineering teams. Attention to detail and a safety‑focused mindset in a healthcare environment. Why Work Here? Work Environment This position is based in a hospital central utility plant and associated mechanical rooms, working primarily on the 2nd shift from Monday to Friday, 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. You must be open to working holidays and weekends when needed, with time‑off requests submitted in advance to allow for coverage. The work takes place in boiler rooms, mechanical spaces, and plant areas that can be hot, confined, and noisy, with frequent standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, and lifting up to 50 pounds. You will work around boilers, steam systems, chillers, chill water systems, HVAC equipment, domestic hot water systems, pumps, valves, and related mechanical and control equipment, using standard tools, testing instruments, and monitoring systems. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and confined space protocols, and requires maintaining clean, orderly, and safe work areas at all times. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bedford, TX. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $36.00/hr.
