Job Description

Purpose/Objective of the
Role:
The herbarium intern will assist curators in upgrading OWUs research collections, mounting and repairing specimens, and packing and sending specimens to other museums.

Qualifications:
Previous experience is not required, but the work requires attention to detail and care in handling fragile and sometimes irreplaceable research specimens.

Useful skills and experience for this position: Work with archival materialsLibrary experienceActivities involving careful record-keepingBiology course workCompletion of biology courses helpful, but not required.

Research collections of plants are shared among botanists around the world as a way to explore and document biological diversity. Key to this interchange is the careful organization, care, and documentation of dried samples of plants. An internship in herbarium curation prepares a student for careers and advanced studies in plant science, museum and archive management, and data science.

Care for and manage plant collections in museums, universities, and botanical gardens.
Collections Manager:
Oversee physical archives, track loans, and supervise the organization of biological specimens.

Conduct research on plant taxonomy, evolution, and ecology using preserved specimens.
Archivist or Librarian:
Manage historical documents, field notebooks, and rare biological literature.
