Job Description

The Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science at Georgetown College invites applications for a Visiting AssistantProfessor of Computer Science, beginning in August 2027. Hiring at the rank of Assistant Professor in a tenure-track line is possible,depending on candidate qualifications. The successful candidate should hold a PhD in an appropriate field by the start date of the position,though applicants with a Master's degree in an appropriate field will be considered. The visiting position is renewable for up to threeyears. The Department offers B.A. degrees in mathematics and engineering mathematics and minors in computer science, mathematics,physics and data analysis. In addition, the Department hosts a pre-Engineering transfer program and participates in a consortium throughwhich students can obtain majors in information technology, cybersecurity, and web design. Emphasis is placed on teaching excellence in thecontext of a church-related college; research and professional development are encouraged and supported. The teaching load is the equivalentof four three-hour courses per semester. The successful candidate would join a team of three mathematicians and two physicists whovalue active learning in the classroom and the systematic development, both in class and in extracurricular activities, of communication andcollaboration skills in addition to the critical thinking and problem-solving skills typically associated with the study of mathematics andrelated areas. We value-and have always enjoyed-strong collegiality both within the Department and across campus. Students in ourDepartment often participate in either our institution's Science Honors Program, which funds a summer of undergraduate research, or in itsOxford Honors Program, under which our mathematics majors can spend one or two terms at Oxford University. We currently teachelementary computer programming and data science courses in the department but expect to expand that with this hire; the successfulcandidate will be able also to guide students in computational work in advanced courses and in senior Honors projects.
