Job Description

Position Description The Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics (ACM) in the School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS) at Yale University invites applications for a tenured faculty position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. We seek candidates from across applied and computational mathematics. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, numerical analysis and scientific computing; differential equations and mathematical modeling; inverse problems and control; and stochastic methods. We particularly welcome research that advances computational methods, including the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning for discovery in applied mathematics and scientific computing. Research motivated by applications is welcome when its contributions are of broad mathematical or computational significance. ACM builds on Yale's established strengths in applied mathematics and on the University's strong tradition of collaboration across departments and schools. Its home in SEAS places fundamental mathematical research in close interaction with engineering and the applied sciences. The successful candidate will play a leading role in the development of this growing department and in building collaborations across Yale. Qualifications Candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, or a related field. Candidates should have a distinguished research record and internationally recognized leadership in their field, together with an ambitious ongoing research agenda. Excellence in teaching and advising is essential, and candidates will be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Application Instructions Applicants should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a research statement, and a teaching statement via Interfolio. Letters of recommendation are not required at the application stage. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Questions may be directed to Eric Michielssen at eric.michielssen@yale.edu. Equal Employment Opportunity Statement The University is committed to basing judgments concerning the admission, education, and employment of individuals upon their qualifications and abilities and seeks to attract to its faculty, staff, and student body qualified persons from a broad range of backgrounds and perspectives. Additionally, in accordance with this Policy and as delineated by federal and Connecticut law, Yale does not discriminate in admissions, educational programs, or employment against any individual on account of that individual's sex; sexual orientation; gender identity or expression; pregnancy, childbirth or related conditions; race; color; national or ethnic origin; religion; age; disability; protected veteran status, or other protected classes as set forth in federal and Connecticut law. Professional Conduct Review for New Faculty Hires The final candidate, upon acceptance of a contingent offer of employment/faculty appointment, may be required to disclose whether they are, or have been, the subject of any disciplinary proceeding (investigation, hearing, etc.) at previous institutions or employers, and may also be subject to a background screening. Candidates who materially misrepresent information on their resume or other application materials are ineligible for hire/appointment. Final candidates may also be required to sign a release to allow Yale to solicit information regarding any substantiated conduct violations from current and/or past employers.
