Job Description

As an Academic Tutor and Mentor with City Year, you'll serve full-time in a partner public school, supporting students' academic and social-emotional growth. You will provide individual and small-group tutoring in core subjects, monitor homework and class participation, and help implement data-informed interventions. You'll build positive relationships, coach students on attendance and behavior, and lead enrichment or after-school activities. Working on a diverse AmeriCorps team, you'll collaborate with teachers, receive robust training and coaching, and grow your leadership skills while advancing educational equity. Responsibilities Provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring in core academic subjects (e.g., math, reading, writing) during and after school Support teachers in the classroom by reinforcing lessons, checking for understanding, and assisting with differentiated instruction Monitor student progress, attendance, and engagement; help implement data-informed academic and behavioral interventions Build positive, mentoring relationships with students to support their social-emotional development and sense of belonging Communicate regularly with teachers, school staff, and teammates about student needs, successes, and intervention plans Lead or support enrichment, after-school, or homework help programs that promote academic skills and leadership Model professional, inclusive, and equity-minded behavior aligned with City Year's mission and values Participate in ongoing training, coaching, and professional development sessions to build tutoring and leadership skills Support school-wide events, family engagement activities, and service projects as part of the City Year team Required Skills Tutoring in math Tutoring in reading and writing Classroom support Behavior management and classroom management support Data entry and basic data analysis for student progress tracking Youth mentoring and relationship building Time management and organization Written and verbal communication Collaboration and teamwork in school settings Basic technology skills (e.g., Google Workspace, learning platforms)
