Job Description

Position Summary:
Amptek is seeking a highly motivated Engineering Technician to support the development, qualification, manufacture, and sustainment of world-class X-ray and gamma-ray detection products. This role will provide hands-on technical support to engineering, manufacturing, quality, and operations teams through breadboard development, troubleshooting, testing, debugging, and other engineering support activities. The successful candidate will play a critical role in supporting new product introduction activities, maintaining existing product lines, diagnosing customer returns, developing test solutions, and improving manufacturing processes. The position requires a strong electronics background combined with hands-on mechanical aptitude and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced engineering and manufacturing environment. This position combines laboratory work, technical troubleshooting, and manufacturing support while collaborating closely with electrical/mechanical engineering, manufacturing, quality, and production teams in Bedford, MA.

Documentation, Equipment Maintenance & Continuous Improvement Key Responsibilities:
Engineering Development & Test Support (60%) Assist engineering teams in prototype assembly, product development testing, and engineering evaluations. Build and modify test setups used for product characterization, environmental testing, and reliability testing. Support collection, analysis, and documentation of engineering test data. Configure laboratory instrumentation including oscilloscopes, power supplies, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, and environmental chambers. Assist in evaluating new electronic, electromechanical, and detector designs. Support engineering teams during design verification and qualification testing. Manufacturing & Test Equipment Support (20%) Support manufacturing operations through assembly, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting of X-ray detectors, sources, and electronics products. Debug printed circuit board assemblies and electronic systems to identify component, assembly, or process-related issues. Perform board configuration changes, firmware loading, calibration, and verification activities. Assist production personnel in resolving technical issues affecting product quality and throughput. Failure Analysis & Sustaining Engineering (10%) Diagnose and repair customer returns, production failures, and engineering test failures. Perform root cause investigations on electronic, mechanical, and system-level issues. Support corrective and preventive action activities. Document troubleshooting findings and recommended corrective actions. Assist engineering teams with implementation and verification of design improvements. Support ongoing reliability, quality, and field performance improvement efforts. Documentation, Equipment Maintenance & Continuos Improvement (10%) Maintain laboratory equipment, test stations, and production support fixtures. Develop and update work instructions, assembly procedures, and test documentation. Assist in maintaining calibration and preventive maintenance records. Support inventory management of laboratory and test equipment. Participate in 5S and continuous improvement initiatives. Maintain compliance with quality system requirements and safety procedures.
Required Qualifications:
Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronic Engineering Technology, or related technical discipline. Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in electronics manufacturing, test, troubleshooting, or engineering support. Experience soldering and reworking through-hole and surface-mount electronic assemblies. Ability to read and interpret electronic schematics and engineering drawings.
Experience troubleshooting electronic circuits using:
Oscilloscopes Digital multimeters Power supplies Electronic test equipment Experience diagnosing PCB assembly defects, missing components, damaged traces, and electrical failures. Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on laboratory skills. Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills, including effective verbal and written communication in English. Demonstrated ability and willingness to use AI tools to improve productivity, decision-marking, work quality, and to reduce costs. The successful candidate must be able to identify appropriate AI use cases and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with scientific instrumentation, analytical equipment, radiation detection systems, or high-voltage electronics. Experience supporting manufacturing test systems and automated test equipment. Experience with temperature controllers and environmental testing equipment. Experience performing basic machining operations including drill press, mill, and lathe work. Familiarity with electronics assembly standards and IPC workmanship requirements. Experience supporting engineering prototype builds and product qualification activities. Knowledge of quality systems, root cause analysis, and corrective action processes.

Pay:
$33.00 - $36.50 per hour Expected hours: No less than 40.0 per week
