Job Description

Position Summary The Engineering Manager builds, formalizes, and leads the Britz engineering department. The role establishes the organization, management practices, technical standards, and controls needed to consistently deliver complete, accurate, manufacturable engineering solutions for standard products and custom projects serving the Laboratory Animal Science market. Working closely with the Director of Product Management (DPM), the Engineering Manager translates product goals and market expectations into technical requirements and executable engineering plans. The DPM establishes product objectives and business priorities; the Engineering Manager organizes resources, directs personnel, and manages technical execution to achieve those goals within agreed schedule, cost, and performance requirements. This position combines hands-on technical leadership with substantial responsibility for department development. Success requires demonstrated experience implementing engineering systems and procedures, developing personnel, and improving the quality and predictability of engineering output. Key Responsibilities Department Organization and Development
  • Assess existing engineering capabilities, workflows, and controls; develop and implement a prioritized department improvement plan.
  • Establish clear roles, responsibilities, approval authority, standard operating procedures, and handoffs appropriate to the size and complexity of Britz operations.
  • Implement practical controls for project intake, scheduling, design review, documentation, engineering changes, and release. Scale review requirements to project complexity and technical risk.
  • Develop staffing, training, software, and resource plans for management approval. Capture existing product knowledge and convert it into reusable standards and technical documentation. Engineering Planning and Technical Leadership Scheduling and Resource Management
  • Maintain a consolidated engineering schedule covering product development, custom projects, product improvements, and production support.
  • Own resource scheduling for all engineering personnel, including engineers and drafting personnel. Estimate effort, assess capacity, assign work, and establish milestones and deliverables based on employee skills and project needs.
  • Agree on achievable engineering commitments with the DPM and affected departments. Identify resource constraints and technical dependencies before commitments are finalized.
  • Conduct regular workload and project reviews; report progress, risks, and recovery actions. Escalate unresolved priority or resource conflicts to the Director of Operations. 8 Candidate Brochure | Britz

  • Direct concept development, feasibility assessment, detailed design, prototyping, and technical problem-solving. Evaluate alternatives for performance, safety, cost, durability, and manufacturability.
  • Lead structured design reviews and establish the engineering deliverables needed at each development stage, from concept selection through validation and engineering release.
  • Ensure appropriate analysis and testing verify technical requirements and validate intended use. Document results, resolve deficiencies, and retain supporting records.
  • Guide material selection, fabrication methods, tolerances, joining methods, and component selection; promote standard components and reuse of proven designs.

  • Maintain revision, approval, access, and archival controls for engineering records.
  • Manage engineering data within Autodesk Inventor, Vault, and related systems; maintain alignment between released drawings, product structures, and ERP bills of material.
  • Implement a formal engineering change process that records the reason for each change, technical review, approvals, affected items, and implementation timing.
