Director of Industrial Automation and Controls

Job Description

Position OverviewWe are looking for an experienced automation and industrial controls leader to drive automation initiatives across manufacturing operations. This role will oversee the development, integration, and ongoing support of PLCs, robotics, HMIs, industrial electrical systems, and other advanced control technologies. The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on technical expertise with leadership experience and a focus on continuous improvement, safety, quality, and manufacturing efficiency.

Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop and execute automation strategies that support manufacturing goals, operational efficiency, quality, and safety.

Lead the design, installation, programming, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of PLCs, robotic systems, HMIs, and industrial control systems.

Oversee the integration of industrial robots and automated equipment to improve productivity and reduce cycle times.

Work closely with engineering teams on electrical schematics, control diagrams, blueprints, and automation designs, including the use of SolidWorks and other CAD tools.

Lead continuous improvement efforts using Lean Manufacturing principles to eliminate waste and improve production processes.

Ensure automation activities comply with CGMP requirements, safety standards, and established manufacturing procedures.

Provide technical leadership involving industrial electrical systems, industrial networks, DCS, vision inspection systems, and PLC-based manufacturing equipment.

Troubleshoot complex automation and equipment issues, including PLC ladder logic, robot programming, electrical systems, controls, and industrial equipment diagnostics.

Interpret electrical schematics, tooling information, machining requirements, and equipment blueprints to support troubleshooting and system improvements.

Develop and deliver training for operators and maintenance personnel on automation equipment, controls, and new technologies.

Evaluate emerging automation, robotics, controls, and manufacturing technologies and identify opportunities to improve operational performance.

Lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams while promoting innovation and reliable automation solutions.

Required QualificationsExtensive industrial or manufacturing engineering experience with a strong emphasis on automation and controls.

Demonstrated expertise in PLC programming, ladder logic, PLC troubleshooting, installation, and repair.

Strong knowledge of industrial electrical systems, electrical schematics, tooling, machining processes, and blueprint interpretation.

Hands-on experience configuring and integrating HMI systems within automated manufacturing environments.

Experience with industrial robotics and robotic programming/integration.

Familiarity with machine vision/vision inspection systems and PLC-controlled production equipment.

Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.

Strong engineering troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities across complex automated equipment.

Ability to lead technical teams and collaborate effectively with engineering, maintenance, operations, and other cross-functional groups.

Strong commitment to manufacturing safety, quality, reliability, and operational excellence.
