Job Description:

Position Summary The Construction Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial operations of the organization. This role manages financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow forecasting, job cost accounting, payroll, compliance, and internal controls while providing strategic financial guidance to company leadership. The Controller ensures accurate financial management of construction projects and supports operational decision-making through detailed financial analysis. Key Responsibilities Financial Management & Reporting Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activities. Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end closings. Manage external audits, tax filings, and financial reporting requirements. Develop and maintain internal controls and accounting policies. Construction Accounting & Job Costing Monitor project budgets and costs to ensure profitability and financial accuracy. Review and analyze job cost reports, work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, and project forecasts. Track project revenues, change orders, retainage, and contract billings. Collaborate with project managers to evaluate project performance and identify cost-saving opportunities. Ensure proper revenue recognition in accordance with applicable accounting standards. Budgeting & Forecasting Lead annual budgeting and forecasting processes. Prepare cash flow projections and financial models. Analyze financial trends and provide recommendations to improve profitability. Support strategic planning initiatives through financial analysis and reporting. Payroll & Compliance Oversee multi-state construction payroll and certified payroll reporting, when applicable. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations. Manage insurance reporting, workers' compensation audits, and bonding requirements. Maintain compliance with contractual and regulatory financial obligations. Leadership & Team Management Supervise accounting and finance staff. Provide coaching, training, and professional development opportunities. Partner with executive leadership to support company growth initiatives. Present financial results and recommendations to owners, executives, and stakeholders. Qualifications Education Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. CPA designation preferred. Experience 5+ years of progressive accounting experience. 3+ years of construction accounting or construction finance experience preferred. Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project financial management. Experience with MS Great Plains. Skills & Competencies Advanced financial analysis and forecasting skills. Strong understanding of GAAP and construction accounting principles. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software. Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. High level of integrity and attention to detail.
