Director of Finance & Accounting Michigan | Full-Time | Leadership Team Position Are You a Builder? Some finance leaders want to step into an established department where the processes are documented, the systems are mature, and the financial infrastructure is already built. Others are energized by the opportunity to build it. Herbert Family of Companies is looking for the second kind of leader. We're a growing, entrepreneurial organization with ambitious plans for the future. We've grown quickly, and like many growing companies, our financial systems, processes, and controls haven't matured as quickly as the business around them. There is meaningful work to do. We need a Director of Finance & Accounting who can strengthen our accounting foundation, improve accuracy and consistency, build the processes and controls we don't yet have, develop the people around them, and create a financial operation capable of supporting where we're headed next. This isn't a maintenance role. It's a building role. And we're looking for someone who wants the opportunity to leave their fingerprints on what we become. Where We're Going We're building toward something much bigger than where we are today. Our family of interconnected companies spans construction, properties, fleet management, and employee leasing, with ambitious long-term growth goals. Getting there will require more than increasing revenue. We need the financial infrastructure, reporting, forecasting, controls, documented processes, and discipline of a much larger organization. That's where you come in. You'll have the opportunity to help build that infrastructure alongside an entrepreneurial ownership group and leadership team that is committed to growing—and committed to getting better along the way. The Leader We're Looking For Technical financial expertise matters tremendously in this position. But how you lead matters just as much. We're looking for someone who can see what needs to change without losing respect for the people and journey that got us here. Someone who can walk into an imperfect process—or discover that a process doesn't exist at all—and say, "Let's figure out how to build this better," then take full ownership of developing the solution and driving it through implementation. You'll need the confidence to challenge assumptions, identify problems, and tell us things we may not always want to hear. We expect that from our leadership team. But you'll also need the emotional intelligence to listen, collaborate, understand context, and bring people along with you. Our leadership team doesn't operate in silos. You'll work closely with our owners, Integrator, and leaders across Operations, Sales, Marketing, and HR. Healthy debate is welcome. Different perspectives are expected. Once we make a decision, we move forward together. We're not looking for perfection. We're looking for progress, accountability, and a leader who can help us continually raise the bar. What You'll Be Walking Into We believe candidates deserve to understand the opportunity they're considering. Our finance and accounting function needs continued development. Some processes need to be built from the ground up, documented, and standardized . Systems need to be improved. Historical accounting issues need to be identified and corrected. Controls need to become stronger as the organization grows. In other words, there's plenty here for a great finance leader to sink their teeth into. You won't be expected to fix everything overnight. You will be expected to assess what we have, identify what's missing, prioritize what matters most, develop a thoughtful roadmap, and steadily move the organization forward. You'll have leadership support and the authority to recommend meaningful change—but you'll also be expected to balance urgency with practicality and recognize that we're operating a growing business while we're improving it. We also believe building for the future means taking advantage of the tools available today. We're looking for a leader who is curious about technology and willing to leverage AI, automation, and other emerging tools to simplify work, reduce repetitive tasks, improve accuracy, and create more efficient financial processes. If you love walking into an organization, figuring out how the pieces fit together, and building something better than what existed when you arrived, you'll probably enjoy this role. You'll have a seat at the table with our owners and leadership team and a meaningful voice in where this organization goes next. If you're looking for a perfectly polished finance department to maintain, this probably isn't your role.
