Directly supervise accounting staff and serve as the primary interface between accounting personnel and the CFO . Own the accounting process from transaction entry through reconciliation, month-end close, and financial reporting. Expected to independently investigate and resolve routine accounting, reconciliation, workflow, and system issues before escalation to the CFO. Accountable for producing accurate, timely, and supportable financial information. Controller Responsibilities Directly supervise accounting staff, assign responsibilities, establish deadlines, and review completed work. Oversee monthly close, financial statement preparation, and general ledger accuracy. Maintain and enforce a formal month-end close process and reconciliation schedule. Review and reconcile all material balance-sheet accounts, subsidiary ledgers, and supporting schedules. Investigate accounting discrepancies, determine root causes, and ensure corrections are completed. Prepare, review, and approve journal entries and adjusting entries. Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, payroll accounting, and related workflows. Maintain accurate job-cost accounting, contract reporting, and project financial data. Ensure costs are properly classified by job, phase, cost code, department, equipment unit, inventory location, and other applicable categories. Oversee inventory, material transfers, plant, quarry, equipment, fixed-asset, and depreciation accounting. Maintain accurate bank reconciliations, debt schedules, cash records, and financial record integrity. Establish, document, and enforce practical accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls. Identify recurring accounting errors and correct the underlying process rather than repeatedly correcting individual transactions. Ensure accounting work is complete, properly supported, and performed according to established deadlines. Produce financial reports analyzing profitability, costs, cash, asset utilization, and material financial variances. Provide the CFO with completed financial information, material exceptions, and matters requiring executive judgment rather than unresolved routine accounting problems. Independently research and resolve normal accounting-system, reporting, setup, and workflow issues. Develop a strong working command of the company's accounting and construction ERP systems. Identify opportunities to improve accounting efficiency, controls, reporting, and automation. Coordinate external audits and provide accurate supporting schedules and documentation. Maintain accounting records in a condition that allows financial information to be produced without extensive reconstruction. Cross-train accounting staff and maintain adequate coverage of critical accounting functions. Ensure unfinished, inaccurate, or delayed staff work is identified and brought through completion. Controller Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or closely related field. Minimum 5-7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience . Demonstrated experience managing monthly close and preparing financial statements. Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting and balance-sheet reconciliation. Demonstrated ability to independently investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies. Experience directly supervising accounting personnel and managing accounting workflows. Strong knowledge of AP, AR, cash, accruals, fixed assets, inventory, and general accounting processes. Construction, heavy civil, manufacturing, mining, materials production, or other job-cost accounting experience preferred. Experience with construction ERP systems such as FOUNDATION, Sage 300, Viewpoint, Spectrum, CMiC, ComputerEase, or similar preferred. Ability to independently learn and effectively manage unfamiliar accounting systems. CPA license or significant public accounting experience preferred. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills. Strong analytical, organizational, and financial reporting ability. Ability to establish priorities, enforce deadlines, and maintain disciplined accounting processes. Ability to perform with speed and precision while maintaining strict accuracy. Demonstrated ownership, follow-through, independent judgment, and ability to carry accounting issues through final resolution.
