Job Description

Category Schools - Orientation and Mobility Specialist Job Type Contract Bring your expertise as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist to a supportive educational setting outside Bourbonnais, IL. This contract opportunity is ideal for professionals eager to make a difference in the lives of students with visual impairments. You'll work part-time (.2 FTE) for the full school year, providing essential services to a small, manageable caseload of four students.
Qualifications and Experience:
Valid certification or licensure as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) Experience supporting school-aged students with visual impairments Strong communication skills for collaboration with educators and families Ability to create individualized mobility programs tailored to each learner Commitment to fostering independence and safe travel skills
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct student assessments to determine mobility needs and skills Develop and implement customized orientation and mobility training plans Provide direct instruction in cane skills, route planning, and safe travel Educate students on navigating indoor and outdoor environments safely Collaborate closely with teachers, support staff, and families regarding student progress Maintain clear documentation and participate in student-focused meetings or IEPs as needed This role provides the flexibility of part-time hours, manageable student numbers, and the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with learners and educators alike. Your guidance will help students achieve greater independence and confidence throughout the school year.
