This energetic role offers the opportunity to develop your brewing skills, support production processes, and ensure the highest standards of safety and quality. As an Assistant Brewer, you will work closely with experienced brewers to assist in all stages of beer production, from raw material handling to packaging, contributing to the creation of outstanding products enjoyed by consumers worldwide. Role and Responsibilities The essential roles, responsibilities and activities a candidate can expect to assume in this position are as follows:
  • In this position you will provide assistance for the entire process of beer production.
  • Cleaning and sanitation are primary components of this job.
This includes:
kegs, tanks (inside and out), floors, drains, draft beer lines, etc. Both CIP and manual cleaning will be required.
  • Milling malt and removal of spent grain.
  • Lifting and organizing 55 lb. grain bags.
  • Beer transfers from fermentation to cellar.
  • CO2 purge and force carbonation.
  • Cask beer filling and tapping.
  • Filling and stacking kegs in the cooler.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and pitch yeast.
  • Maintain inventory and cellar records.
  • Follow and potentially create beer recipes.
  • Other responsibilities as identified and assigned. Expectations
  • Following direction and demonstrating a strong attention to detail is critical.
  • Reading, writing, and strong computer skills will be necessary. We expect you to keep learning.
  • Currently, we are a small brewery. Some days you will be on your own and other days you'll be working with the entire company. We want you to be able to do both so we can accomplish our goals.
  • Occasional weekends and evenings may be required for special events. Making beer should be a life style, not a nine-to-five commitment. Solid time management and prioritization skills are expected.
  • Small problems left unresolved, usually become big problems someone else must solve later. Use your excellent communication skills to share bad news early.
  • You should be open to furthering your education relating to beer and the craft beer industry while accepting new challenges on a regular basis. Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Valid driver's license with a responsible driving record, registered and insured vehicle, and ability to drive to and from work and occasional events.
  • You must have and maintain an Indiana Alcohol Server's Permit. We will ask to see it when we hire you, and shortly after it is supposed to be renewed.
  • Physically capable of a variety of duties including but not limited to repeated lifting of 55 pounds or more, extended amounts of standing, stooping, crouching, and climbing.
  • The ability to educate people from all levels of knowledge on the merits of craft brewing and specifically Saint Joseph Brewery.
  • Able to think critically and demonstrate an understanding of chemistry, microbiology, and mathematics. Additional Notes
  • Compensation is based on experience and includes an hourly wage. Benefits including but not limited to group health insurance, vacation time, and a very liberal product sampling program.
Work Hours:
Most weeks are Monday - Friday.
  • Employee will need to supply their own cellular phone.
  • Employee will need to pay for their own expenses, but we will reimburse you for the legitimate business expenses (as defined by the IRS).
  • We encourage you to not come to work on the following days: Your Birthday, New Year's Day; President's Day; Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day; Veteran's Day; Thanksgiving; Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
