Job Description

If you are a thoughtful student of canine behavior who values strong dog/guardian relationships, force-free handling, and loves being outside, you can find a home here. We actively welcome established trainers, emerging professionals, and dedicated trainers-in-training alike. Dog Adventures Northwest is a premier canine nature enrichment company based in the Portland area, with regional hubs around the country. We bridge practical behavioral science with pure outdoor decompression—matching skilled, ethical handlers with small, curated dog groups on private and wild trails.
About Dog Adventures Northwest Trainer-Led Field Enrichment:
We provide door-to-door, small-group, off-leash hikes in natural environments. Strict 4:1
Welfare Standards:
We maintain a maximum ratio of four dogs per trainer to ensure safe group dynamics, careful arousal management, and individual attention.
Satellite GPS Technology:
Every dog on every outing is equipped with real-time Garmin satellite GPS tracking. Exclusive Portland 70-

In addition to public trail networks, our Portland contractors hold exclusive access to 70 fully fenced private acres of woods, meadows, rivers, and ponds near Downtown Portland, with new private land options coming to expansion cities.
Uncompromising Ethical Baseline:
We operate strictly under humane, science-based, force-free training principles and the LIMA hierarchy. Aversive tools (including prong, choke, or shock collars) are not permitted.
Full Operational Infrastructure:
Our centralized operations team manages client onboarding, behavioral vetting, recurring scheduling, card-on-file billing, and administrative support so trainers can focus entirely on field handling. You hike with dogs and get paid. We do everything else.
Professional Standards & Mentorship:
We maintain an active network of credentialed trainers, ongoing skill-building, and structured pathways for established trainers-in-training to log verified hours toward industry certification. Job Details /
Duties Lead Small-Group Wilderness Adventures:
Transport and guide small, compatible groups of dogs (maximum 4:1 ratio) on 2-hour "paws on the ground" nature hikes across regional trail networks or private acreage (each adventure typically runs 4 to 5 hours total, including door-to-door transport).
Proactive Behavioral Management:
Actively monitor canine body language, manage group arousal levels, prevent conflict, and practice reliable reinforcement-based recall and engagement in dynamic outdoor environments.
Satellite Safety Protocols:
Use Garmin satellite GPS tracking units prior to unloading and maintain continuous field awareness.
Client & Field Communication:
Share simple observations and a post-visit report card to clients through our centralized scheduling and messaging platform.
Secure Transport:
Provide safe, climate-controlled transportation with individual crating or secured containment for each dog during transit.
Autonomous Schedule Control:
As an independent contractor, you designate your weekly availability, service areas, group combinations, and client load. We get the clients and manage all administration so that you can get on the trail with the dogs.
Ideal Candidate Training Credentials or Active Study:
Holds an accredited, LIMA-based certification (e.g., CPDT-KA, KPA-CTP, IAABC-ADT, CTC, VSA-CDT, CATCH) OR is an established trainer-in-training actively working toward certification through coursework, mentorship, or logging practical hours. (Are you neither of these things, but want to make dogs your new career? Reach out! We are happy to mentor passionate dog people toward certification.)
Canine Literacy & Ethics:
Understanding of canine body language, emotional states, stress signals, and positive-reinforcement handling. A complete commitment to humane practices, animal welfare science, and LIMA principles.
Outdoor Fitness & Handling Composure:
Physically comfortable hiking 4 to 6 miles on varied natural terrain in all weather conditions while remaining observant, calm, and proactive with multiple dogs.
