Job Overview We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Veterinary Technician to join our team. This role supports the medical care of shelter and client-owned animals at the SPCA Albrecht Center's Veterinary Care Center and works closely with veterinarians and veterinary assistants to provide safe patient care, support surgery and wellness services, and keep the clinic running smoothly. Key Responsibilities Prepare patients for procedures, including administering medications, inducing anesthesia, and intubating patients as directed by a veterinarian. Monitor patients during anesthesia and recovery, recognize concerning changes, and respond promptly to emergencies. Assist veterinarians with surgery, examinations, treatments, and rechecks. Handle and document medications, including controlled substances, according to clinic procedures. Maintain accurate medical records and help coordinate patient care and daily surgical flow. Safely handle and restrain animals, using appropriate equipment and asking for help when needed. Communicate clearly and compassionately with clients, including reviewing discharge and postoperative instructions. Help train veterinary assistants and new staff on patient care protocols. Clean and maintain treatment areas, equipment, and supplies; follow all safety and infection control procedures. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Veterinary technician credential or enrollment in an approved veterinary technology program preferred. Experience in a veterinary clinic, spay/neuter program, or animal shelter preferred. Ability to recognize changes in a patient's condition, stay calm during emergencies, and work effectively with a busy team. Strong animal handling, communication, and recordkeeping skills. Work Environment and Schedule This is a hands-on position in a busy veterinary clinic. The employee must be able to stand for extended periods, bend and kneel, and lift or move animals and equipment up to 50 pounds with assistance when needed. The role involves exposure to animals, cleaning products, anesthetic agents, and sharps. The usual schedule is Monday through Friday, with occasional schedule changes based on clinic needs.
