Job Summary St. John's University School of Law is seeking a candidate for the position of Director of the Mattone Family Institute for Real Estate Law. The Director will grow and manage the Mattone Institute and will be instrumental in meeting the strategic goals of student success as well as enrollment (of both JD and LL.M. students) as it pertains to real estate law focused students, thereby increasing revenue. The Director will report directly to the Associate Dean for Career Development and Externships and will work closely with the Associate Dean for Enrollment and External Relations and the Associate Dean for Law School Advancement. Job Responsibilities The Director of the Mattone Institute will direct the day to day administration of the Mattone Institute and will be instrumental in the development and management of a Real Estate LLM program. The Director will have a focus on JD and LLM students with an interest in real estate law and will grow and manage the Mattone Institute, giving a strong and cohesive home to our various real estate initiatives. The Director will be instrumental in meeting the strategic goals of student success as well as enrollment (of both JD and LL.M. students) as it pertains to real estate law focused students, thereby increasing revenue: Serve as Co-Director of the Real Estate LL.M. Program. This entails the recruitment, enrollment, course development, marketing and management activities in support of the program. Work with the Enrollment Office to play an integral role in the revenue-generating process of recruitment. This includes targeting prospective JD students to attend St. John's because of our varied real estate offerings as well as targeting JD students from other schools to enroll in our Real Estate LL.M program. This also includes targeting international students who practice real estate law in their home country. Various tasks may include development of stories of successful real estate law JD students, etc. Work with the Academic Dean to assess curricular needs and ensure a robust roster of advanced real estate course offerings each semester. Assist in the development of JD and LL.M. real estate courses. This includes the development of course proposals and coordination of such proposals with the Academic Dean and Curriculum Committee. Encourage appropriate students to enroll in advanced real estate courses. This includes advising current JD and LL.M students on the various course options and educating existing JD students on the joint real estate law JD/LL.M option. This also includes taking on the administrative role of confirming eligibility and enrolling JD students for LL.M. level real estate courses. Identify and recruit adjunct professors to teach real estate law-related courses. This includes alumni with specialized expertise, as well as judges and other practitioners. Work with the Academic Dean to manage the JD and LL.M. adjuncts. This includes staffing specific classes, answering questions, and assisting with ongoing course administration as needed in order to create an environment where adjunct instructors can reach their full teaching potential. Hire and manage student worker and research assistant staff for the Mattone Institute as needed. Serve as primary point person for real estate law related programs/workshops, including academic colloquia and conferences, continuing legal education, student internships and clinical training. Update resources. Manage the Real Estate Fellowship Program, including recruiting and advising on the selection of new Fellows for the Program , and working with individual Fellows to help advance their career goals. As a member of the Career Development Office, the Director will facilitate student success by counseling JD and LL.M. students on their professional development. The Director will have a focus on students with an interest in real estate law.
Responsibilities will include:
Assisting and advising students and alumni in all aspects of their career development. Reviewing and critiquing resumes and cover letters, preparing advisees for interviews, advising on summer, semester and post-graduate job search strategies, and following up regularly. Maintaining regular contact with students and graduates and tracking activity in Symplicity. Providing academic advising to assigned JD and LL.M. students. Regularly liaising with faculty, alumni, and administrators. Work closely with the Career Development Office employer outreach team to research and develop real estate-based student externships, internships and jobs and schedule and participate in employer meetings Work with the Alumni Office to advance engagement with alumni in the real estate industry with the aim of linking them with students for job opportunities and networking purposes, driving additional financial contributions, identifying and recruiting new Advisory Board members, and promoting loyalty to the Law School. Serve as primary point person with respect to the arrangement, organization and promotion of real estate alumni-facing events such as receptions and CLE events. Cultivate key alumni relationships through frequent contact. Attend St. John's Law alumni events and industry events that permit interactions with key players in order to advance these goals. Manage the administrative responsibility for the efficient operation of the Mattone Institute, including: Identifying, recruiting, and managing Alumni Board of Directors members, scheduling meetings and events with them, and regularly keeping them apprised of Mattone Institute updates Designing and approving marketing materials, with the assistance of the Communications Office Overseeing the Institute's web presence and webpage content Overseeing a robust calendar of real estate-focused student events. Interacting with students, other administrators and faculty Monitoring progress of students Developing, updating, and reporting on program performance metrics. Managing the Institute's budget. Serve as an advisor to the NY Real Property Law Journal and the Real Property Law Society. Supervisory Responsibility This position will recruit and manage adjunct professors teaching real estate law related classes, as well as student fellows and student workers. Competencies, Education, Experience Superior interpersonal, communication, organizational, writing and administrative skills; knowledge of the legal profession. Experience in and knowledge of real estate law practice required. Knowledge of varied technology, such as generative AI platforms, Symplicity and social media. Student advising and/or career counseling experience preferred. Strong leadership skills. Real Estate Law practice experience.
Required Education and Experience:
A Juris Doctor degree is required. 5 or more years' relevant professional experience required.
Preferred Education and Experience:
10 or more years' relevant professional experience preferred. Additional Eligibility Qualifications Admission to NY state bar preferred. Membership and involvement with real estate law professional associations preferred.
