Conduct Background Check and Drug Screen Position Summary:
The Manual Mill and Lathe Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, adjusting, and inspecting work performed on manual mills, engine lathes, drill presses, grinders, and related machine shop equipment in support of IAG Engine Center's aerospace engine and component repair operations. This position machines, modifies, repairs, and fabricates precision parts to approved technical data, process travelers, drawings, and quality requirements while maintaining safe work practices, accurate documentation, and consistent production flow.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: Set up and operate manual milling machines, engine lathes, drill presses, grinders, saws, and related machine shop equipment to machine aircraft engine and component parts in accordance with approved work instructions, drawings, specifications, and process travelers. Read, interpret, and follow blueprints, technical drawings, sketches, repair instructions, travelers, operation sheets, tooling sheets, inspection requirements, and applicable customer or OEM specifications. Select, install, indicate, and verify proper cutting tools, fixtures, vises, chucks, collets, centers, boring bars, cutters, inserts, workholding, speeds, feeds, and machining sequences for assigned operations. Lay out work, establish reference points, indicate parts, square material, align fixtures, and secure workpieces to maintain dimensional accuracy, perpendicularity, parallelism, concentricity, and surface finish requirements. Perform manual turning, facing, boring, threading, grooving, drilling, tapping, reaming, milling, slotting, keyway cutting, surface preparation, and general machining operations on aerospace components and repair parts. Safely load, position, secure, and unload parts, fixtures, tooling, and materials using approved lifting devices, cranes, hoists, slings, vises, clamps, and rigging methods when required. Make machine adjustments, tool changes, feed and speed changes, depth-of-cut adjustments, and setup corrections to maintain accuracy, finish, and production requirements. Inspect first-piece, in-process, and completed work using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, depth gauges, thread gauges, indicators, height gauges, gauge blocks, and other approved inspection equipment. Maintain tight tolerances, verify conformance to specifications, document inspection results when required, and promptly notify supervision or quality personnel of any nonconforming condition. Machine and repair materials commonly used in aerospace and industrial repair environments, which may include steel, stainless steel, nickel alloys, Inconel, titanium, aluminum, bronze, castings, weld repairs, and coated or repaired components. Fabricate or modify simple tooling, fixtures, shop aids, bushings, spacers, sleeves, pins, repair details, and other parts as directed by approved drawings, sketches, or supervision. Support production efficiency by reviewing job requirements, planning setups, identifying tooling or process concerns, and recommending practical improvements to reduce rework, downtime, and setup time. Perform routine machine care, housekeeping, lubrication checks, and basic preventive maintenance activities; report machine issues, tooling concerns, or unsafe conditions immediately. Maintain accurate labor, production, inspection, and job documentation in accordance with company procedures and quality system requirements. Coordinate with quality, engineering, planning, maintenance, and supervision to resolve machining questions, clarify technical requirements, and support on-time completion of work. Follow all safety, environmental, quality, tool control, foreign object damage prevention, and housekeeping requirements applicable to machine shop operations. Perform other machine shop, production support, and operational duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities): High school diploma or GED required; technical school, machining certificate, apprenticeship, or equivalent hands-on experience preferred. Minimum of three years of manual machining experience preferred, including experience setting up and operating manual mills, engine lathes, drill presses, grinders, or similar machine tools. Aerospace, aviation MRO, engine component repair, precision manufacturing, repair machining, toolroom, or regulated repair environment experience preferred. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, technical drawings, process travelers, operation sheets, inspection requirements, tolerances, surface finish callouts, thread callouts, and basic GD&T symbols. Working knowledge of manual machining practices, including feeds and speeds, tool selection, workholding, indicating, layout methods, threading, boring, milling, drilling, reaming, and finish machining. Proficient with precision measuring tools, including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, depth gauges, thread gauges, indicators, height gauges, gauge blocks, and related inspection equipment. Strong shop math skills, including decimals, fractions, geometry, trigonometry basics, tolerances, tap drill sizes, thread calculations, speeds and feeds, and use of calculators or conversion tools. Ability to safely rig, lift, position, indicate, and handle parts, fixtures, tooling, and materials using cranes, hoists, slings, vises, clamps, and approved lifting practices. Ability to troubleshoot machining issues, identify tool wear, chatter, setup concerns, or out-of-tolerance conditions, and communicate concerns clearly to supervision, quality, or engineering. Must be dependable, detail-oriented, safety-focused, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced machine shop environment. Ability to work overtime, alternate shifts, or flexible schedules as business needs require. Must be authorized to work in the United States.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This position operates in an aviation MRO machine shop environment and requires regular work around manual mills, engine lathes, drill presses, grinders, rotating equipment, cutting tools, lifting devices, components, coolants, chips, shop noise, and production activity. The Manual Mill and Lathe Machinist must be able to follow safety requirements, maintain concentration around moving equipment, and work with changing production priorities while protecting personnel, product quality, and company assets. Work requires standing and walking for extended periods, bending, reaching, climbing machine platforms or steps, and using hands and vision to perform coordinated machining, setup, layout, and inspection tasks. Work may require lifting, pushing, pulling, or moving tools, fixtures, and materials; heavier items must be moved using approved lifting equipment or assistance. Work may involve exposure to typical machine shop conditions, including noise, metal chips, coolant, oils, sharp edges, rotating machinery, forklifts, cranes, hoists, rigging equipment, and production equipment.
