The CNC HBM Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, adjusting, and inspecting work performed on CNC Horizontal Boring Mills, horizontal machining centers, and related precision machine shop equipment in support of IAG Engine Center's aerospace engine and component repair operations. This position performs precision boring, milling, drilling, tapping, facing, and related machining operations on large, complex, and high-value components using approved technical data, CNC programs, process travelers, drawings, and quality requirements while maintaining safe work practices, accurate documentation, and consistent production flow.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: Set up and operate CNC Horizontal Boring Mills, horizontal machining centers, and related machine shop equipment to machine aircraft engine and component parts in accordance with approved work instructions, drawings, specifications, CNC programs, and process travelers. Read, interpret, and follow blueprints, technical drawings, CAD/CAM setup sheets, repair instructions, operation sheets, tooling sheets, inspection requirements, and applicable customer or OEM specifications. Load, retrieve, verify, and make approved edits to CNC programs at the machine control, including tool offsets, work offsets, coordinate settings, speeds, feeds, and minor program adjustments as required. Select, install, indicate, and verify proper cutting tools, fixtures, angle plates, boring bars, cutters, inserts, probes, workholding, and machining sequences for assigned HBM operations. Lay out work, establish datums, indicate parts, align fixtures, tram heads, square material, and secure workpieces to maintain dimensional accuracy, perpendicularity, parallelism, concentricity, flatness, and surface finish requirements. Perform CNC boring, milling, drilling, tapping, reaming, facing, counterboring, pocketing, slotting, bolt-hole pattern machining, and other precision machining operations on aerospace components and repair parts. Safely load, position, secure, and unload large or heavy components, fixtures, tooling, and materials using approved lifting devices, cranes, hoists, slings, clamps, and rigging methods when required. Monitor machine operation, tool performance, coolant flow, spindle load, part movement, chatter, dimensional drift, and finish quality; make approved adjustments to maintain accuracy and production requirements. Inspect first-piece, in-process, and completed work using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, depth gauges, thread gauges, indicators, height gauges, gauge blocks, test indicators, and other approved inspection equipment. Maintain tight tolerances, verify conformance to specifications, document inspection results when required, and promptly notify supervision or quality personnel of any nonconforming condition. Machine and repair materials commonly used in aerospace and industrial repair environments, which may include steel, stainless steel, nickel alloys, Inconel, titanium, aluminum, bronze, castings, weld repairs, and coated or repaired components. Support production efficiency by reviewing job requirements, planning setups, identifying tooling or program concerns, and recommending practical improvements to reduce rework, downtime, cycle time, and setup time. Perform routine machine care, housekeeping, lubrication checks, coolant checks, chip removal, and basic preventive maintenance activities; report machine issues, tooling concerns, program concerns, or unsafe conditions immediately. Maintain accurate labor, production, inspection, setup, and job documentation in accordance with company procedures and quality system requirements. Coordinate with quality, engineering, planning, programming, maintenance, and supervision to resolve machining questions, clarify technical requirements, and support on-time completion of work. Follow all safety, environmental, quality, tool control, foreign object damage prevention, and housekeeping requirements applicable to CNC machine shop operations. Perform other machine shop, production support, and operational duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities): High school diploma or GED required; technical school, CNC machining certificate, machine tool technology program, apprenticeship, or equivalent hands-on experience preferred. Minimum of three years of CNC machining experience preferred, including experience setting up and operating CNC horizontal boring mills, horizontal machining centers, CNC mills, or similar precision machine tools. Experience with large-part machining, heavy-component setup, precision boring, multi-axis positioning, angle plate setup, and complex workholding preferred. Aerospace, aviation MRO, engine component repair, precision manufacturing, repair machining, toolroom, or regulated repair environment experience preferred. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, technical drawings, process travelers, CNC setup sheets, inspection requirements, tolerances, surface finish callouts, thread callouts, and basic GD&T symbols. Working knowledge of CNC machining practices, including feeds and speeds, tool selection, work offsets, tool offsets, probing or indicating methods, workholding, boring, milling, drilling, tapping, reaming, and finish machining. Ability to load, verify, and make approved edits to CNC programs at the control; familiarity with common machine controls such as Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, Mazatrol, or similar controls preferred. Proficient with precision measuring tools, including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, depth gauges, thread gauges, indicators, height gauges, gauge blocks, and related inspection equipment. Strong shop math skills, including decimals, fractions, geometry, trigonometry basics, coordinate calculations, tolerances, tap drill sizes, thread calculations, speeds and feeds, and use of calculators or conversion tools. Ability to safely rig, lift, position, indicate, and handle large parts, fixtures, tooling, and materials using cranes, hoists, slings, clamps, and approved lifting practices. Ability to troubleshoot machining issues, identify tool wear, chatter, setup concerns, program concerns, or out-of-tolerance conditions, and communicate concerns clearly to supervision, quality, programming, or engineering. Must be dependable, detail-oriented, safety-focused, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced CNC machine shop environment. Ability to work overtime, alternate shifts, or flexible schedules as business needs require. Must be authorized to work in the United States.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This position operates in an aviation MRO CNC machine shop environment and requires regular work around CNC Horizontal Boring Mills, horizontal machining centers, rotating equipment, cutting tools, lifting devices, large components, coolants, metal chips, shop noise, and production activity. The CNC HBM Machinist must be able to follow safety requirements, maintain concentration around moving equipment, and work with changing production priorities while protecting personnel, product quality, and company assets. Work requires standing and walking for extended periods, bending, reaching, climbing machine platforms or steps, and using hands and vision to perform coordinated CNC setup, machining, layout, and inspection tasks. Work may require lifting, pushing, pulling, or moving tools, fixtures, and materials; heavier items must be moved using approved lifting equipment or assistance. Work may involve exposure to typical CNC machine shop conditions, including noise, metal chips, coolant, oils, sharp edges, rotating machinery, forklifts, cranes, hoists, rigging equipment, and production equipment.
