Job Summary Academic Advisor II is an experienced advising professional who independently manages a varied student caseload while consistently applying the university's RISE Developmental Advising Model and departmental Standards of Practice. This position builds developmental relationships, supports students in connecting academic choices to long-term goals, and promotes informed decision-making, self-advocacy, persistence, and timely degree completion. Academic Advisor II also contributes to advisor development, assessment, and continuous improvement by sharing effective practices and supporting departmental initiatives. Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks Independently establish welcoming, inclusive advising relationships through professional communication, active listening, empathy, accessibility, and practices that foster student success. Engage students in meaningful exploration of academic, career, and personal goals and use developmental coaching and open-ended questions to promote reflection, motivation, and informed decision-making. Independently advise prospective and current students regarding degree requirements, complex academic policies, curriculum planning, registration, graduation requirements, and institutional processes. Develop accurate individualized academic, four-year, or completion plans, including pre-enrollment when appropriate, that connect academic choices to long-term goals and support persistence and timely degree completion. Guide students in evaluating options and consequences, developing clear and documented action plans, and strengthening self-advocacy, resilience, confidence, and ownership of academic decisions. Identify academic, personal, financial, or other barriers; make timely and appropriate referrals; coordinate with campus partners when appropriate; and follow through consistent with departmental expectations. Prepare for appointments, anticipate student needs, and communicate in advance when accommodations or additional planning are needed. Use CIVITAS and other university technologies to document advising interactions accurately, objectively, and within required timeframes; monitor progress; identify trends; and conduct proactive outreach. Independently manage appointments, outreach, documentation, assigned caseload responsibilities, and competing priorities while maintaining reliable service and follow-through. Participate in orientation, registration, retention, enrollment, and student success initiatives and contribute positively to departmental committees, workgroups, and special projects. Serve as a resource and peer mentor for new or developing advisors by modeling effective practice, sharing knowledge, and assisting with onboarding or training as assigned. Contribute to assessment and continuous improvement by reviewing advising trends, sharing observations, and recommending improvements to practices, services, or operational processes. Build collaborative partnerships with faculty, colleagues, and campus departments while maintaining confidentiality, accountability, ethical judgment, and a welcoming professional environment. Complete required and advanced professional development; engage in reflective practice; and apply coaching and feedback to strengthen advising effectiveness. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Education/Experience Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Two (2) years of related experience. Demonstrated proficiency in academic advising or related student success work through progressively responsible experience. Demonstrated ability to independently apply developmental advising principles while supporting student persistence, retention, and degree completion. Successful completion of departmental advising competencies and required professional development. May accept a combination of education and experience. Preferred Education/Experience Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Human Development, Counseling, Student Affairs, Communication, or a related helping profession. Experience in higher education advising or student services. Completion of professional development in developmental advising, appreciative advising, motivational interviewing, NACADA, or related areas. Experience mentoring colleagues, facilitating training, or leading departmental initiatives. Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies Advanced working knowledge of university policies, academic regulations, curriculum requirements, advising technologies, the RISE Developmental Advising Model, and departmental Standards of Practice. Demonstrate ability to independently build developmental relationships, facilitate goal exploration, and use open-ended coaching techniques that promote student motivation and ownership. Ability to develop accurate academic and degree-completion plans and guide students through complex options, consequences, referrals, and documented action steps. Ability to maintain accurate, objective, and timely CIVITAS documentation and use student success technologies and data to support proactive advising. Ability to independently manage a varied caseload, appointments, outreach, documentation, and multiple priorities with consistent preparation and follow-through. Strong critical thinking, solution-focused problem solving, professional judgment, and decision-making skills in complex advising situations. Ability to mentor peers, share best practices, support onboarding or training, collaborate across departments, and contribute to assessment and continuous improvement. Excellent communication, facilitation, organization, accessibility, and relationship-building skills. Commitment to reflective practice, coaching, professional development, innovation, and continuous improvement.
