Peer Support Specialist Emerald City Behavioral Health University Place / Tacoma, Washington $54,080

Emerald City Behavioral Health is hiring a full-time Peer Support Specialist to provide community-based recovery support to adults living with serious mental health conditions and co-occurring substance use disorders. This is a consistent weekday position with no nights, weekends, or on-call shifts . Peer Support Specialists spend the first part of the workday at regularly assigned residential and community locations and return to the ECBH clinic in the afternoon for documentation, team communication, and coordination. ECBH considers applicants through current Washington peer credential pathways, including CPSS, CPSST, and eligible Certified Peer Counselor transition pathways. Required supervision is provided for eligible trainee pathways. Minimum Qualifications Applicants must hold an active Washington credential or credential status that permits them to provide the peer services required for this position, or be able to obtain the required credential before beginning peer-service duties. ECBH considers candidates through applicable Washington pathways, including: Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) Certified Peer Support Specialist Trainee (CPSST) Eligible Certified Peer Counselor candidates during Washington's current credential transition period Candidates working toward full certification are expected to understand their current credential pathway and actively participate in required supervision, professional development, and advancement toward full certification.

Ability to use lived experience intentionally and professionally within the peer-support role Understanding of recovery-oriented, person-centered, and trauma-informed peer support Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and confidentiality Ability to document services clearly and accurately in an electronic health record Ability to work independently in community settings while collaborating with a multidisciplinary behavioral health team Ability to work Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m

What You'll Do Peer support is a distinct, nonclinical behavioral health service. Peer Support Specialists use shared experience, relationship building, recovery principles, and practical support to help individuals strengthen recovery, engage in treatment, develop confidence and independence, and remain successfully supported in the community. You will work alongside therapists, psychiatric providers, nurses, substance use disorder professionals, other peer specialists, residential staff, and community partners.

Responsibilities include:

Build consistent, respectful, recovery-focused relationships with individuals receiving services Use lived experience appropriately to promote hope, engagement, self-direction, and recovery Help individuals identify personal recovery goals and practical steps toward achieving them Support continued engagement in behavioral health treatment and recovery services Strengthen self-advocacy and help individuals communicate their goals, needs, and preferences Support development of healthy social connections, natural supports, daily-living skills, and community involvement Help individuals identify and connect with appropriate community resources Participate in planned community and pro-social activities that support confidence, connection, wellness, and recovery Help individuals develop practical wellness, recovery, and symptom-management strategies within the peer scope of practice Recognize meaningful changes in functioning, engagement, or circumstances and communicate concerns to appropriate members of the treatment team Collaborate with residential staff and multidisciplinary team members Participate in team staffing, service planning, and recovery-focused care coordination Complete accurate and timely peer-service documentation in the electronic health record Maintain confidentiality, professional boundaries, and ethical peer-support practices Peer Support Specialists do not diagnose behavioral health conditions or provide mental health or substance use disorder counseling. Full-time, salaried, overtime-eligible position No night shifts No weekend shifts No on-call requirement Begin the workday at the first regularly assigned residential or community location at 9:00 a.m. Visit approximately two to three regularly assigned locations before returning to the ECBH clinic at approximately 2:00 p.m. Complete documentation, team communication, coordination, and other assigned responsibilities at the clinic through 5:00 p.m. Assigned locations are generally consistent, with infrequent changes to the established schedule Travel is normally limited to approximately a 20-mile radius of the clinic This is an in-person, community-based position and is not remote

Compensation and Benefits Salary:

$54,080

65 per mile for required travel between work locations, including return travel to the ECBH clinic Required supervision for eligible trainee pathways Ongoing professional development Opportunities for advancement Current insurance plans cover employees only. Dependent coverage is not offered at this time. Preferred Experience Previous paid peer-support experience is welcomed but is not required for an otherwise qualified candidate.
