This position is also responsible for transporting students to and from school field trips as needed. Duties and Responsibilities Must operate and maintain the bus in a safe manner. Must maintain route schedules and reports in a timely and accurate manner. Must maintain a positive and disciplined atmosphere on the bus at all times and during trips. Inspects the bus for mechanical defects and checks fuel, tires, and fluid levels before departure. Drives bus along assigned route and schedule. Stops only at authorized stops. Complies with all traffic and safety regulations related to operating a school bus. Updates route information as necessary. Assures that authorized students load and unload the bus in a safe manner. Maintains discipline when students are on the bus and reports discipline problems to the proper authority. Keeps the bus clean, enforces regulations against eating and littering on the bus. Reports delays, injuries or accidents and fills out related reports. Performs a variety of related duties as required. Operates a variety of bus types and sizes based on the requirement of the route/trip. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies: Valid CDL with school bus driver endorsement (minimum class B with passenger and school bus endorsements) Must possess a Michigan Department of Education School Bus Driver's Certification Card Must possess or be willing to obtain a Federal Medical Examiner's Certificate (DOT Med Card) Must possess an Education Card to show continued school bus education through the KISD. Must have a clean driving record with no at-fault accidents or traffic citations in the past five years. High school diploma or equivalent. Must meet all state and district requirements to drive a school bus. Consistent and reliable attendance is essential. Must pass a background check with fingerprinting. Preferred Experience Prior experience working with children and the public is a plus Proven experience as a school bus driver or a similar role Physical Demands / Work Environment The job requires you to be physically capable of sitting, standing, and moving in various ways, including bending, twisting, and stretching. You must also have the dexterity of hands to perform different tasks and the visual acuity needed for driving, especially the ability to maintain focus. Be prepared for a work environment that can be noisy and involves working both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions. You will have direct and complete responsibility for the safety of students. Mentally, the role demands that you can evaluate information, communicate clearly, and coordinate tasks with others, all while using strong interpersonal skills to instruct and guide.
