Job Title:
Bus Mechanic Job Description This role focuses on performing comprehensive maintenance and repair on transit buses, including diagnosing electrical systems, conducting minor engine and transmission work, and handling routine services such as brakes and oil changes. You will work with a high level of independence, managing multiple work orders each day while ensuring that every bus is safe, reliable, and ready to return to service. Responsibilities Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical systems on buses, including multiplex systems, to identify faults and perform effective repairs. Perform minor engine and transmission work as needed to maintain safe and reliable vehicle operation. Conduct brake services, oil changes, and other routine maintenance tasks according to established procedures. Inspect, service, and repair bus air conditioning (AC) units to ensure proper climate control for passengers and operators. Carry out interior and exterior body work on buses, including basic repairs and adjustments to panels, fixtures, and fittings. Use hand tools and power tools, such as power drills, safely and effectively to complete mechanical and body repairs. Complete thorough visual inspections on each bus before work begins and after work is completed to confirm quality and safety. Work independently to manage a daily workload of up to 10 job orders, ensuring all assigned tasks are completed within the workday whenever possible. Accurately document all work performed on each job order, including repairs completed and any items not completed or deferred. Adapt to working in a variety of weather conditions, including outdoor environments, while maintaining high standards of workmanship. Essential Skills 2-5 years of hands-on experience working on buses or trucks in a maintenance or repair capacity. Proficiency in using hand tools and power tools for mechanical and body repair tasks. Demonstrated experience performing detailed visual inspections on vehicles before and after maintenance or repair. Practical experience diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, including multiplex electrical systems. Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair diesel or automotive systems relevant to buses and heavy vehicles. Strong troubleshooting skills in automotive repair, including brake, transmission, and general fleet maintenance. Ability to work independently and manage a workload of multiple job orders within a single day. Computer and documentation skills to accurately record work performed and update job orders. Capability to work safely in shop and outdoor environments, following established safety procedures. Background with major automotive brands such as Chevrolet or Ford. Completion of technical schooling or formal training in automotive, diesel, or bus technology. Welding experience for minor body or structural repairs. Prior experience as a bus mechanic, bus technician, or diesel maintenance technician. Experience working within or alongside unionized shop environments. Why Work Here? Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Franklin Park, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $32.00/hr.
