Job Description
Purchasing Agent - Machine Shop Environment Specialized Staffing Solutions is a locally owned and operated staffing firm based in Ponchatoula, Louisiana. Job Summary We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Purchasing Agent to join a fast-paced machine shop. This individual will be responsible for sourcing, purchasing, and maintaining inventory levels of raw materials, tooling, equipment, and production supplies necessary to support daily manufacturing operations. The ideal candidate will have experience in industrial purchasing, strong vendor negotiation skills, and a solid understanding of machine shop operations. Key Responsibilities Purchase raw materials including steel, aluminum, stainless steel, plastics, and other metals used in manufacturing. Procure cutting tools, inserts, abrasives, machine parts, maintenance supplies, safety equipment, and shop consumables. Maintain appropriate inventory levels to support uninterrupted production schedules. Obtain quotes, compare pricing, negotiate costs, and establish favorable terms with vendors. Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers while evaluating vendor performance for quality, pricing, and delivery. Issue and manage purchase orders while ensuring accuracy and timely delivery. Coordinate with Production, Engineering, Shipping/Receiving, and Accounting to ensure material availability aligns with production demands. Monitor supplier lead times and proactively resolve shortages or delivery issues. Review inventory reports and forecast purchasing requirements based on production schedules. Maintain accurate purchasing records, pricing history, and vendor documentation. Assist with annual physical inventory counts and cycle count accuracy. Ensure purchased materials meet quality specifications and company standards. Identify cost-saving opportunities through strategic sourcing and process improvements. Follow company purchasing policies and maintain compliance with all applicable procedures. Qualifications Minimum of 2-3 years of purchasing experience , preferably within a machine shop, manufacturing, or industrial environment. Strong knowledge of industrial materials, tooling, machining supplies, and manufacturing processes. Experience with inventory management and ERP/MRP software systems preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel. Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Strong negotiation and communication abilities. Ability to prioritize multiple projects while meeting deadlines. High attention to detail with strong mathematical and data entry skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment. Preferred Qualifications Experience purchasing for CNC machining, fabrication, or precision manufacturing operations. Knowledge of blueprint terminology, machining processes, and industrial tooling. Experience working with multiple vendors and managing supplier relationships. Understanding of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement practices. Physical Requirements Ability to sit, stand, and walk throughout the workday. Occasionally lift or move materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Ability to visit production areas and warehouse locations as needed. Ability to use standard office equipment for extended periods.
