The Associate or Junior Buyer assumes responsibility for the specified-item purchases but coordinates with the Head Buyer. Assistant Buyers are responsible for routine aspects of the work. They coordinate stores or departments, supervise personnel, and maintain sales and inventory records. The Buyers work closely with managers, salespersons, salesclerks, and advertising and systems personnel. Buyers must watch general economic conditions to anticipate consumer buying patterns. In addition, they must keep abreast of style and manufacturing trends, read fashion and trade magazines, follow ads in newspapers and other media, and check retail competitors' sales activities. The main role of a retail buyer is to successfully purchase attractive merchandise, the price, quality and availability of which meet customer needs. By fully understanding the customers' wants and needs, buyers are able to maximize profits and provide a commercially viable range of merchandise at competitive prices. The role of the buyer is demanding yet rewarding. Although support is provided it does involve considerable responsibility and autonomy. The ability to multi-task, prioritize work and meet strict deadlines are key requirements of a role that requires competency in a wide range of other skills such as analytical, motivational and leadership. Overall, duties typically involve but not limited to: planning and selecting the range, type, quantity and quality of merchandise according to customer demand, trends, store policy and budget; sourcing new products and reviewing existing ones to ensure products remain competitive; analyzing trends; regularly reviewing performance indicators with sales; managing the plans for stock levels, reacting to change in demand and logistics; maintaining relationships with existing suppliers and sourcing new suppliers for future products; liaising with other departments within the organization to ensure projects are completed; participating in promotional activities; writing reports, sales forecasting, and analyzing sales figures; liaising with the individual store's personnel to ensure product/collection supply meets demand; making contact with customers to get feedback on the merchandise; training and mentoring junior store staff. manage and analyze stock levels and order points using computers and statistics contact suppliers to replenish stocks obtain information from store and salespeople about stock levels and fast- and slow-moving goods The EJE Travel Retail buyer has a great part of the responsibility for the success or failure of the business depending on the merchandise purchased.
