Location:
Massachusetts (Boston area), with national travel | Reports to: CEO About Sundial Health Sundial Health collaborates with leading hospitals and health systems to extend their clinical reach into underserved communities. Sundial establishes portable, staffed clinical sites — offering services such as ultrasounds and blood draws — closer to where patients live, with all clinical data and results routed directly back to the collaborating hospital's physician of record, who remains fully responsible for diagnosis, treatment, and continuity of care. Sundial's model is built on in-person, community-based, close-to-home care that improves patient outcomes and reduces the overall cost of care for the population that it serves. Having built a strong foundation in fertility care through collaborations including the Massachusetts General Hospital Fertility Center, Sundial is now expanding into prenatal and postpartum services , bringing its portable-site model to address one of the most pressing access gaps in maternal health: geographic and logistical barriers to consistent prenatal monitoring, particularly in rural communities nationwide. At its core, Sundial exists to bring quality healthcare back to the communities that need it most. Across the country, rural hospitals have closed labor and delivery units, obstetric providers have left, and expectant mothers are left driving long distances or going without consistent prenatal care altogether. Sundial's model restores access without asking patients to travel or asking hospitals to compromise on quality: the same physicians and clinical standards patients would find at a leading academic medical center are delivered closer to home. Prenatal care is the starting point for this mission and the first proof point for a broader vision of restoring access to essential healthcare in underserved rural communities nationwide. Sundial's customers will continue to be hospitals and health systems that seek to extend their reach into previously hard to reach rural communities. While working directly with Ob/Gyn departments, colleagues focused on population health will likely be involved given the opportunity to reduce overall costs.
The clinical evidence is strong:
early and sustained prenatal care measurably reduces NICU admissions and downstream costs. Every $1 invested in enhanced prenatal care returned $4.52 in NICU cost savings to payers (Crockett et al., Women's Health Issues , 2017). Given that the average NICU stay runs 13.2 days at an average cost of $76,000 (exceeding $280,000 for infants born before 32 weeks), even modest reductions in preterm birth and NICU admission rates translate into meaningful savings for hospitals and payers alike (March of Dimes). Sundial's growth strategy is built on this same logic: access, quality, and cost are not competing priorities, but a single value proposition for the hospitals they collaborate with. Federal and state governments also understand the value of adding quality care in rural communities, and are providing a multitude of grant opportunities to support this kind of innovation. Sundial aims to work with these government grantors and assist its hospital customers in obtaining grants to cover program start-up and capital costs, while payer reimbursement and incentives will support ongoing clinical operations. The Opportunity Sundial is seeking a Vice President, Growth Strategy and Business Development to build and lead the national revenue and growth strategy for this expansion — starting from the ground up with rigorous research and market analysis, rather than a predetermined regional plan. This is a foundational leadership role with two distinct phases. First, conduct an assessment of rural maternal health access gaps, hospital landscape, and state-by-state grant/government funding opportunities. Then, using that research, determine priority states and build and drive Sundial's national growth strategy. Every stage of this work should be grounded in a single question: where is the need for access to quality prenatal care greatest, and how can Sundial get there fastest and most effectively? This role reports directly to the CEO. What You'll Do Phase 1: National Research & Market Assessment In collaboration with Sundial's founders and growth team, conduct a comprehensive, state-by-state analysis of rural maternal and prenatal health access gaps across all 50 states, including provider shortages, hospital/birthing unit closures, maternity care deserts, and relevant demographic and health outcomes data. Identify and evaluate academic medical centers and major hospital systems in each state as potential collaborators, assessing their rural/community outreach mission, existing infrastructure, and openness to a hospital-as-provider-of-record collaboration model. Build a comprehensive inventory of state and federal grant, government, and health-policy funding programs relevant to rural prenatal access expansion, including eligibility requirements, funding cycles, award history, and fit with Sundial's model, across all 50 states. Synthesize this research into a clear prioritization framework and recommend priority states/regions for initial and subsequent expansion, balancing need, funding availability, hospital-readiness, and operational feasibility. Phase 2: Growth Strategy & Execution Translate the research into a phased national growth strategy, with clear sequencing of priority states, target hospital collaborators, and funding pathways. Build initial marketing materials for introducing new service to the marketplace including decks, story, social media plan, communication plan, and conference plan. Build and manage the hospital/academic medical center partnership pipeline in priority states, leading outreach, negotiation, and contracting in collaboration with clinical, operations, and legal teams. Lead pursuit of state and federal grant funding identified in Phase 1, building the internal grant-application and reporting infrastructure needed to manage multiple concurrent state-level funding relationships. Own relationships with relevant government agencies in priority states and, where useful, external government relations/consulting partners to support funding and policy positioning. Develop Sundial's payer and reimbursement strategy for prenatal diagnostic services delivered in collaboration with hospital providers of record, accounting for state-by-state variation. Set and drive toward revenue, collaboration, and site-expansion targets in partnership with the CEO, and establish the metrics and reporting cadence to track progress against the national strategy. Build out the growth function and team over time, including sales and marketing, business development, partnerships, and grants/government relations capabilities, hiring and managing team members as the function scales. What You Bring 10+ years of experience in healthcare growth, strategy, or business development leadership roles, ideally including experience scaling a service line, care model, or partnership network across multiple states or regions. Excellent relationship-building and negotiation skills, with the ability to represent Sundial credibly to hospital executives, government officials, and funding partners across diverse states. Demonstrated ability to conduct market research and translate it into an actionable, prioritized strategy. Experience with marketing will be helpful. Demonstrated success building and closing collaborations with hospitals or academic medical centers, ideally in a model where the collaborating organization remains the clinical provider of record. Experience with healthcare grant funding and/or government relations a plus. Securing state or federal grant funding in a healthcare context is a plus. Familiarity with maternal health, women's health, or reproductive health care delivery and/or rural health access issues is a plus. Track record of building a growth or business development function from an early stage, including hiring and managing a team. Understanding of healthcare payer and reimbursement dynamics, including state-level variation and financial incentives for providers. Comfort operating in a fast-moving, resource-constrained, growth-stage environment, with the ability to move fluidly between deep research, strategic planning, and hands-on execution. Strong candidates will be self-driven and confident, with a passion for making a difference in healthcare. They will be excited about being a great team member while also being an effective leader. Why Join Sundial This is an opportunity to lead the growth of a company on a mission to bring quality women's health care back to rural communities that have lost it and use that foundation to expand access to essential services for the patients who need them most. The Vice President, Growth Strategy and Business Development will shape where and how that mission grows: leading the foundational research that determines which communities Sundial serves next, then building the team and executing the strategy to get there. For someone who wants their work to translate directly into expectant mothers in underserved rural areas getting the prenatal care they deserve, this is a rare chance to build that impact from the ground up. This is also a rare ground-floor opportunity. The Vice President, Growth Strategy and Business Development will be joining with a considerable equity/stock option opportunity that reflects the scale of impact and responsibility this role carries. You won't be executing someone else's playbook. You'll be writing it, with the opportunity to define and drive Sundial's success in the prenatal market from day one.
