Hamilton County, OH Emergency Management & Homeland Security Agency (EMHSA) is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Emergency Management Intern. This position is designed for current students or recent graduates looking to gain hands-on practical experience in county-level emergency management and develop foundational skills that will jumpstart a career in the field of emergency management, homeland security and/or public safety. Hamilton County EMHSA is a progressive agency that focuses on all-hazards emergency management for a diverse county with urban, suburban, and rural populations. We are committed to investing in the next generation of public safety professionals. This internship includes opportunities for meaningful professional development, which may include attending local or state training courses, participating in planning meetings, and gaining exposure to industry professionals and networks. As part of Hamilton County EMHSA, the intern will work directly alongside experienced emergency managers to support the development and maintenance of critical county-level emergency plans, assist with the coordination and execution of exercises, and support the development of public information and outreach products. Instead of just watching from the sidelines, you will actively contribute to real-world emergency management efforts, hone your written and verbal communication skills, and learn how to apply local, state and federal guidance to community resilience.
Duties for this position include:
Emergency Management Support:
Assist with the development, review and updating of emergency management plans, procedures, and supporting documents under the guidance of emergency management staff. Contribute to special projects that support agency objectives and community preparedness initiatives. This will involve participation in planning meetings, internal briefings and collaborative projects with agency personnel and partner jurisdictions/departments.
Training and Professional Development:
Complete required training courses, including FEMA Independent Study (IS) courses and other relevant agency specific training, as assigned. Apply learned emergency management principles, policies and best practices to assigned tasks and projects. Additionally, engage in mentorship opportunities with experienced emergency management professionals on staff.
Public Information and Community Engagement:
Support public information efforts, including the development of outreach materials and preparedness messaging. Assist with community outreach events, training, or preparedness campaigns. This includes helping to communicate emergency management concepts to diverse audiences in a clear and professional manner.
Exercises and Projects:
Assist with the planning, coordination, and execution of emergency exercises and drills. Conduct research and data collection to support planning, exercises, or after-action activities. Provide support on day of exercises to include setup, registration and facilitation.
Evaluation and Feedback:
Participate in regular check-ins and evaluations to assess progress and learning outcomes. Incorporate feedback to improve performance and professional development throughout the internship. Other duties as requested. Regular and reliable attendance during regular scheduled days and work hours. Requirements (Education, Experience Licensure, Certification): A valid Driver's License is required from state of current residency (OH, KY, IN).
Working Conditions:
Work is performed primarily indoors in an office setting. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate. While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be required to travel.
