Compensation:
Hourly, $20-24, plus benefits HSWRI operates a marine fish hatchery supporting the state's Ocean Resources Enhancement and Hatchery Program (OREHP), administered by the CA Department of Fish and Wildlife, which rears and releases white seabass at growout facilities across Southern California to help replenish depleted fisheries. Job Summary Reporting to the Director of Fisheries Replenishment Operations, the Coordinator oversees tagging, transport, and growout of hatchery-reared white seabass; ensures compliance with permits and the Growout Procedures Manual; supervises the Assistant Growout Coordinator; and represents HSWRI through public outreach. Will assist with SCUBA-based facility maintenance and, depending on qualifications and funding, net-pen research. Key Responsibilities Monitor fish health, husbandry, and pen maintenance at 10 growout sites; assist with hatchery raceway operations and fish health treatments. Coordinate coded-wire tagging and manage growout pens in Agua Hedionda Lagoon (site upkeep, net swaps, cleanliness). Oversee fish transport logistics and equipment; ensure compliance with animal care and biosecurity protocols. Supervise the Assistant Growout Coordinator; train/schedule staff and volunteers; coordinate semi-annual growout meetings. Maintain net inventory, support growout system design/maintenance, and assist with surface/subsurface upkeep of facilities. Ensure accurate data collection and reporting; keep the Growout Procedures Manual current; contribute to reports and proposals. Conduct public outreach at meetings, club events, and via phone, email, newsletters, and web. Qualifications Aquaculture and/or cage-farming experience with marine finfish strongly preferred. Basic SCUBA certification required; scientific diving experience preferred. Valid driver's license required: this role regularly requires driving 300-500 mile round trips and trailering loads up to 10,000 lbs; subject to approval by HSWRI's insurance carrier. Strong organizational and time-management skills; proficient with standard office software; able to work independently and in a team. Able to work outdoors in coastal/marine settings 75% of the time, including irregular hours, weekends, and overnight travel as needed. Able to routinely lift/carry 50 lbs and occasionally 75 lbs; vision, hearing, and speech sufficient for field and office communication with or without reasonable accommodation.
