Job Hours:
6:00 - 3:30
Job Summary:
The Material Handler is responsible for coordinating the flow of steel materials throughout the assembly process at Empire Industries. This role ensures timely delivery and organization of raw materials, finished goods, and scrap, supporting efficient production operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Operate a forklift as the primary tool for transporting materials throughout the facility Receive incoming raw materials, including steel coils and bar stock, often delivered on non-standard pallets requiring advanced forklift handling skills Prepare and stage outgoing shipments for products requiring outside services (e.g., plating, heat treating) Receive and process completed products returned from outside vendors Maintain and organize stock locations in the Press Room, ensuring materials are properly labeled and stored Service all production machines by delivering raw materials and removing completed parts Route completed parts to appropriate destinations: stock, assembly department, or staging for outside services Act as the inventory controller for the Production department, ensuring physical inventory aligns with system records Conduct regular cycle counts and assist with full physical inventories Collaborate with production planning to ensure material availability and workflow efficiency Identify and report damaged or defective materials and assist in resolving material discrepancies Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in accordance with company safety standards Support continuous improvement initiatives related to material handling and inventory
Qualifications:
Minimum of 2 years of fork truck experience, valid forklift operator certification or the ability to complete internal certification upon hire Minimum of 2 years of experience in a manufacturing or warehouse environment, with a focus on forklift operation and material movement Experience with inventory control systems and conducting cycle counts; familiarity with ERP or MRP systems is a plus
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED required Minimum of 2 years of experience in manufacturing, warehouse, or industrial environment Proven experience operating forklifts, including handling non-standard pallets and heavy materials Understanding of shipping/receiving processes, including preparing materials for outside services and handling returned goods
Mental & Cognitive Requirements:
Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, including safety procedures and work orders. Basic math skills to monitor part counts, measurements, or setups. Strong attention to detail to identify defects or issues with materials. Ability to remain alert and focused in a repetitive or fast-paced work environment. Capability to work independently with minimal supervision. Decision-making and problem-solving skills for addressing minor machine issues or material inconsistencies.
Physical Requirements:
The physical requirements listed below represent the essential job functions that must be performed. Reasonable accommodation may be provided for qualified individuals with disabilities. Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 8-10 hours per shift) Frequent bending, reaching, and stooping. Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds occasionally. Ability to use personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, and hearing protection. Tolerance to loud environments (ear protection provided). Visual acuity to read gauges, labels, and inspect parts.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in a manufacturing environment with exposure to loud noise, moving mechanical parts, and varying temperatures. May be exposed to oil, grease, metal shavings, dust, and other production-related materials and by-products. The environment may be fast-paced with frequent interruptions and requires adherence to strict safety protocols. Use of PPE is mandatory as per company policy and safety guidelines.
