Forklift Operator Job Description The Forklift Operator safely reads and follows work orders to gather, move, and stage cut lumber and metal connector plates needed for roof and floor truss production. This role focuses on accurate material handling, safe operation of forklifts and warehouse equipment, and maintaining a clean, organized work area to support efficient construction manufacturing. Responsibilities Read and interpret pick lists, work orders, and production schedules (typed, handwritten, or on computer screens) to pull the correct sizes, grades, and quantities of lumber and metal connector plates. Safely operate sit-down forklifts and other warehouse machinery to transport heavy bundles of wood and materials between receiving, staging, saw, and assembly areas. Move raw cut lumber and metal connector plates from receiving or staging areas to the designated saws or assembly tables. Inspect lumber for defects, warping, or damage and ensure only acceptable materials are passed on to builders. Lift, stack, band, and mark product, and push or pull loaded carts to specified locations within the facility. Pull metal connector plates accurately according to work orders and production requirements. Maintain a tidy, safe, and organized saw and assembly area to reduce workplace hazards and support efficient production flow. Perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance of equipment and the work area to ensure safe and reliable operation. Follow all safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (steel-toe boots, safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves) at all times. Support shipping, receiving, inventory, and material handling activities as needed, including loading and unloading materials. Use tape measures and other basic tools to verify material sizes and meet measurement specifications. Communicate effectively with production workers and other team members to coordinate material flow and meet schedule requirements. Essential Skills At least 6 months of recent forklift operating experience, preferably with sit-down forklifts in a warehouse or manufacturing environment. Proven ability to read and interpret work orders, pick lists, and production schedules in both printed and digital formats. Ability to consistently lift 50+ pounds throughout the shift, including stacking and moving lumber and materials. Successful completion of a skills and measuring test with a score of 90% or higher. Experience with warehouse operations such as shipping, receiving, inventory, picking, loading, unloading, and material handling. Competence using a tape measure and basic measurement tools to verify material dimensions. Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate selection of lumber sizes, grades, quantities, and connector plates. Commitment to safety, including proper use of PPE and adherence to facility safety procedures. Ability to work in a fast-paced, equipment-intensive environment with dust, dirt, and noise. Reliable attendance and ability to work assigned first or second shift hours. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience in a construction, truss building, or lumber manufacturing environment. Background in indoor warehouse or production settings involving heavy material handling. Experience organizing work areas to improve workflow and reduce safety risks. Comfort working with carts, banding tools, and basic warehouse equipment. Strong teamwork and communication skills to coordinate with production and assembly personnel. Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions and meet production schedules. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role is based in an indoor construction-type production facility focused on truss building. Work is performed on either 1st shift (7:00 AM - 3:00 PM) or 2nd shift (3:00 PM - 11:00 PM), with orientation for both shifts beginning at 7:30 AM on the first day. Team members wear required PPE such as steel-toe boots, safety glasses, ear plugs, and gloves, and spend most of the day on their feet, operating forklifts, moving carts, and handling materials in an active production area. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of La Crescent, MN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.25 - $19.75/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
