The Lumber Grader Visually inspects and marks various types of woods to ensure proper specification and color grades. The Lumber Grader will also serve as a Back-Up Forklift Operator, responsible for safely transport loads, ensuring operational efficiency, quality and inventory control.
Essential Functions:
Examines lumber on table, moving belt, chain conveyor, or in racks for defects such as knots, stains, decay, splits, faulty edges, pitch pockets, wormholes, and defective milling, mixes glue Grades lumber to ensure specified dimensions Marks lumber to indicate grade and processing instructions Tallies pieces of lumber according to grade and board footage Determines cuts to be made to obtain highest marketable value from material Removes unsatisfactory pieces from conveyor or table and places pieces on stacks, in bins, or on carts Scales board footage and records results Performs other related duties as assigned by Supervisor and or Manager. Continual quality checks Work area is to be kept clean and organized Operates forklift to receive and store lumber and load equipment. Assists with monthly and annual inventory cycle counts and tracking.
Knowledge, Skill and Experience:
High School Graduate/GED and/or 1-year related experience Minimum 2 years of lumber experience Strong communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to work well within a diverse team environment Forklift operation experience Physical requirements: lifting up to 50 lbs., standing, repetitive arm/hand motion, pulling, reaching, bending. Basic math skills Ability to use a tape measure in both inches and millimeters
License/Certification:
Valid NC/SC driver's license (Required)
